Encouragement
Chances are if you've driven a car in the past few years you've used a GPS in your trek from point A to point B. Whether you're traveling over the river and through the woods to grandma's house or trying to find the nearest running trail this modern technological wonder has proven useful in getting us to our destination in the most proficient manner. But what if your GPS suddenly took you down the wrong road? Would you continue on in the same path? Don't all roads eventually lead us to our final destination anyway?
On a recent trip to New York to visit family it was smooth sailing up until we got to New Jersey and that's when our excursion took a wrong turn. Our GPS indicated there was heavy traffic up ahead and suggested we take an alternate route to avoid the congestion. I marveled at how far we've come with technology that computers can predict for us hazards on the road miles in advance and thought to myself surely she must know where she's going. So we decided to trust our GPS and follow the alternate route we were given, but what Tina and I quickly learned were three things 1) always know where you're going, 2) all roads do not lead us to our destination, and 3) never call your GPS Shirley.
Shirley…I mean the GPS led us not only several miles off course in the opposite direction, but at one point she had instructed us to literally go off road. True story. Had we followed the directions of the GPS at that precise moment we would've crashed our vehicle into someone's front living room while later crooning that catchy State Farm jingle for an insurance representative to come bail us out. This could have proved extremely disastrous and my wife and I would have been seriously injured or worse killed for obeying the commands of a voice who falsely misled us.
The same can be true of our spiritual journey. With so many religions in the world and man-made philosophies abound it’s easy to get confused on which is the right path to follow. There’s an old adage that is popular still to this day which falsely proclaims that “all roads lead to heaven”. Without a spiritual GPS or “Godly Positioning System” to guide us we too can find ourselves on the wrong side of road and headed towards imminent danger. Thankfully we do have something to guide us on this journey called life which is the truth of God’s word.
When Jesus was speaking to the disciples about His returning home, Thomas still doubting yet bursting at the seams with wonderful questions asked him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (Jn 14:5). Jesus lovingly replied, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (v.6). Although this statement provides a sense of exclusivity with respect to the Christian faith, we mustn't forget also that God’s love is inclusive in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us all. Because He took the initiative in doing what we could never do on our own, Christ provided the one and only way to the kingdom of heaven so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life!
Run to win,
