“Your Majesty,” Captain Gabriel cried. “Your Son has been sentenced. Shall I go and set Him loose?”
The King shook His head. “Let Him be. I am testing Him.”
Captain Gabriel bowed and took his place beneath the Throne.
Another captain, leaning over the Royal Banister, gave a horrific cry, “Oh, Your Majesty! Your Son is being whipped and flogged. His blood is running down His back. Oh, look, look! He is in pain!”
The King spoke with firmness, “Let My Son be. My Heir must pass the test to the Throne.”
Obediently, the captain held his peace and watched silently.
A man then called, further down the Royal Banister, “Hark! The King’s Son is being led to the hill called Golgotha to be crucified!”
“Oh, see His pain!” another wailed.
“Look at His blood soaking His robe!” another exclaimed, bending over the Royal Banister.
“Your Majesty,” Captain Gabriel winced as he watched the King’s Begotten Son trudge wearily up the hill of Golgotha, the blood soaking His seamless garment. “He is willing to lay His life down for Your Will. He is willing, but oh, Your Majesty, will You give me leave to spare Him? He’s the very Image of Your Likeness. His very Words are Yours. Behold, see how He utters not a word of complaint? Hasn’t He passed the test, Your Highness?”
“Not yet,” the King’s voice was deep with feeling. “Not until the price has been paid. Not until the Lamb has been slain for from the very foundation of the world I planned this.”
“Does not Your heart break, Your Majesty,” Captain Gabriel’s eyes were full of tears, watching the Roman procession down below, “to see Your Son led to the slaughter?”
“Yes,” the King’s voice was low. “My heart does break for He is My Only Son.”
Captain Gabriel lowered his head in deep mourning for the King’s Only Son was to be slain.
“Hark!” a man heralded throughout the wide space of the palace. “The King’s Son now lies upon the cross! He is nailed! He is lifted to the air on the wooden beam!”
“I have lifted Him up for all man to see,” the King spoke softly. “He’s taking the blame of all man, freely.”
“Your Majesty,” Captain Gabriel spoke in anguish. “Shall I relieve Your Son now? Is it time? Hasn’t He passed the test and proved that He is truly the Heir to Your Throne? Shall I loose Him? Oh, look how He cries! He calls for You, Your Majesty. Hear Him! Oh, hear Him call for His Father!”
There rose a wail from along the Royal Banister from the watchers who had witnessed the whole procession of the King’s Son being led to the cross.
“Oh, shall I loose Him?” wailed Captain Gabriel, eyes streaming with tears. “Your Majesty, I cannot bear to see Your Only Son in such torture! He is the Heir. He will soon be upon the Throne. When shall I loose Him?”
“Captain Gabriel,” the King’s voice was stern and commanding. “Close the curtain of My palace. Let My Son pass the great test. Let the victory be won! For I give to My erring children upon earth the sacrifice of My Son’s life to save them. The price must be paid. He alone can redeem their souls. He alone can die to give them life. He alone can bridge the gap from them to Me. He will loose the prisoners. He will set My children free!
“Oh, Captain Gabriel, officers of My Kingdom, all creation, listen to My Words! The captives will be free, the mourners will rejoice, the seekers will find peace, the lost will find the Way, the dead shall be alive, the old shall be made new!
“Did you see the stripes upon His back? They are there to heal the sick. He is wounded for man’s transgressions. Now do you see His blood running down the cross? That is for the salvation of My children. Oh, let the victory be won! Let the medal be received for I’ve put trust in My Begotten Son! Let Him hang there on that cross until Satan lies defeated. It’s the price for all of My lost children. I give to them My Son, My Only Son!”
