The breath of air that you just had, love, time, your family, your life…you got them all for free from the father of all graces.
In the world we live in, there is nothing free. You have to earn every bit and piece of it. It rewards only the best - the fittest athlete, the hardest working businessman, the shrewdest politician, the smartest student, the prettiest model. An absolutely tit-for-tat world. To have it, you have to deserve it; you have to toil and earn it.
Then there is this grace thing. Free gift. But not just to the ordinary; free gift to the least deserving, to the undeserving. Grace is illogical and obscure, a language too exotic for the flesh bearer.
How graceful of God to make the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and to send rain to the just and the unjust.
How graceful of Jesus to die for the very people who were taking turn nailing his hands to the cross.
How graceful of Jesus to befriended the sinners of his time.
How ungraceful of his followers today to let the world perceive us as anti-these folks & anti-those folks.
How graceful of a Rwandese genocide survivor who went to a prison to forgive the man who killed her mother and brother.
How graceful of a Christian lady who forgave and called the person who murdered her son “my adopted son”.
Isn’t it amazing this grace thing? Isn’t it out of this world? Perhaps it is heavenly then.
To those of us to whom a lot of grace is shown to (while still undeserving), we need to show a lot of grace to the world. It is the sweetest language that can truly surpass all understandings.
It is not anymore “no pain - no gain”. To us, the least deserving, his love response on the cross is… “I pain - you gain”.
That is an amazing grace, how sweet the sound…
Humbled & inspired by Philip Yancey’s “What’s So Amazing About Grace?”
