Sufficient Grace
I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:7-9 (NIV)
Paul tells us that God wanted to keep him from conceit, so he was given a thorn in his flesh by a messenger from Satan, to torment him. Many have speculated just what that thorn was. Many state it is a metaphor for some other ailment. I won’t speculate sometimes a thorn is just a thorn. Either way this thorn tormented Paul. Paul said he pleaded to God three times to have it removed. Paul tells us God said to him: “my Grace is sufficient for you.” I want to stop there for purposes of this devotional. We know God wanted to show His power in Paul’s weakness.
God told Paul: “My Grace is sufficient for you,” Wow, God wasn’t going to remove the thorn. God had plans for the thorn. Paul was to live with it. After thinking about this statement from God, His grace was not only sufficient it was much more than sufficient. Paul was to have eternal life through the life sacrificing blood of Jesus. Jesus is God’s Grace. Sin is washed away through the sacrificial death of Jesus. Jesus died so Paul and all of us could live. When you think about the enormity of the statement, what is a little thorn in our lives compared to eternal life and how we achieved it. I also thought sufficient; sufficient didn’t even begin to describe the awesomeness God’s Grace through the sacrificial death of Jesus.
Come on God, you could have done better than a word like sufficient. Then I realized it was God who said it. Sufficient must be a bigger word then I think. The word sufficient means enough. Enough is all I need not more than enough. If I went to a spaghetti dinner and the cost was $1.00 for all you can eat, no matter how hungry I was, I wouldn’t ask for $2.00 worth. $1.00 is sufficient. The word sufficient is exactly what I need; I don’t need to replace it. God said sufficient.
God said Paul could live with the thorn. We can live with our thorns but we can’t live without God’s Grace. No matter the thorn, God will use us; through our weakness, He is strong. No matter what our thorn we can be convinced that God’s grace is sufficient. I don’t need to look for another word, or figure out why God wouldn’t remove Paul’s thorn. God knows exactly what He is doing and what he is saying, it is perfect and it is sufficient.
God Bless
