WHY STUDY ABOUT JESUS?
Some will ask why we need to study about Jesus and who He is. His existence is something we believe and enjoy. He is our Savior and Lord.
Looking at Colossians 1 gives us our list about why we should study Christology (the study of the doctrinal teaching of Jesus). (Unless otherwise indicated, we are using THE
HOLY BIBLE, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®. Copyright© 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society. Used by permission of Zondervan Publishing House. All rights reserved.)
Reason #1 – Paul is the human writer that God used to write Colossians. He says that he prays for the believers who attend the Colossian church to have “...God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and
understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord….” (Verses 9 & 10) We study about who Jesus is so that we can live in a worthy manner. We will never live worthy enough to earn salvation, but we can live worthy of Him. In other words, we want to please the One who saved us from our sin.
Reason #2 – Verse 10 also says “…and may please Him in every way….” When we love someone, we want to please them in every way. The more we love Jesus, the more we wish to please Him. In order to please Him, we need to know what it is that pleases Him. That should motivate us to study Him and who He is.
Reason #3 – Again in verse 10 we read “…Bearing fruit in every good work…. ”When we are walking in Christ and walking in the Spirit, we bear fruit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control, souls won to
Christ). How we do that is through the person that Christ is. After all, He is living within us and produces the fruit that we bear.
Reason #4 – The last phrase in verse 10 says, “growing in the knowledge of God.” (The Amplified Bible adds, [with fuller, deeper, and clearer insight, acquaintance, and recognition of God]. Jesus told His disciples that when they saw and knew Him, they saw and knew the Father as well. (For example, read John
10:30 & 38b and also John 14:1-6)
Reason #5 – We grow weak when we are battling life on a daily basis. Colossians 1:11 says, “being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.” To know Jesus is to know His strength.
Reason #6 – So that we can worship Him with true understanding of Who we are worshipping and why we worship Him.
