Psalms 46:1-11
1.God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble, 2. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains tall into the heart of the sea, 3. though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 4. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.7. The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8. Come and see the works of the Lord, the desolation he has brought on the earth. 9. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with tire. 1O. Be still, and know that l am God; l will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. 11. The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
The LORD Almighty says, "Be still, and know that l am God." As we read this a hush should fall upon us and around us because we realize this is from God's word. This is from God and if we are still, if we stop to listen to his voice, if we are quiet and give ourselves to a moment of meditation, we will come face to face with the fact that GOD IS GOD.
(Pause)
Psalms 47:7-8 says, “For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.”
Yes, God is God and he is also King over all the earth - the whole earth. He reigns over the nations. He rules from his holy throne. It should take only a little time and thought for us to realize this but we might be like some people that Paul met one time whom he talks about in Acts 17:16-34.
These men were very religious and so to make sure that they were worshiping the real god they even had an idol with an inscription "TO AN UNKNOWN GOD".
If God is God, it does us no good to worship “an unknown god” if we do not know who he is.
Many people, even now, worship an unknown God. Do we? Do you? Do l? If we know that God is God, we should "seek him" and "reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us." Acts 17:27.
But even though he is not far from each one of us, many people, even now, worship an unknown God. Sometimes it is even done while thinking the true God is being worshiped. When we are trying to worship the true God, we will be trying to do our best to please him because we know He is God. We will be still - we will stop our complaining - we will stop our quarreling - we will stop having to have things go "our way". Our lives will be yielded to God and to God's way. Our lives will be spent in loving others.
Our lives will be given to caring for other‘s needs. Our lives will be off “ourselves” and on “others”. Our wants and even our needs will come after others wants and needs. Others will be more important than our self. We will humble ourselves to serve others.
(READ Phil. 2:1 -18)
This is an enormous task. It is even a very frightening task. It is an undertaking that has to be decided on day by day, every day. It is not a "do it today if it is convenient" task.
It is not an "I‘ll start tomorrow" decision. It is the “dying daily” task. It is the task of taking up Jesus' cross daily. It is the exalting God and serving him in such a way that we see everything we do for someone else as being done directly to God and for God.
We yield ourselves to God and for God to use us in any way he pleases. If he wants to feed the hungry, it will be through our hand. If he wants to cloth someone, it will be through our hand. If he wants to care for someone by showing them love and concern, it will be through our love and concern. When we pray to God to help the needy we will then be seeking a way to do what we can to help the needy and God will answer our prayers by helping us help them. We will give our hands, our hearts, our resources, our lives to God to do his good pleasure. We will deny our self in order to do for others. We will humble ourselves in order that God can be exalted.
If God is God to us we will be diligent to learn God‘s will for our lives. We will learn what God wants us to do - even expect us to do. We will then live God‘s way. We will work God‘s way. We will pray God’s way. We will worship and serve God his way. We will be concerned about the things that concern God.
If God is God to us we will make sure that our job, our recreation, and our companions don’t keep us from showing that we believe that God is God.
We will be continually expecting God‘s spirit to be working in our lives -leading us, molding us, shaping us. We will be continually looking to see how God is molding us to make us more like Jesus. We will be working out our own salvation with fear and trembling because we might only be thinking we are something when we are nothing at all like what God wants us to be.
In all of this we will be walking by faith. Hebrews 11:6 says, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
God is God. So let us live like we believed it.
