HE IS EITHER GOD OR MAD: THE EXCLUSIVE CLAIMS OF JESUS
John 1:4-9, 8:12, 9:5, 39, 11:9-10, 12:35-36, 46; 1John1:5-7, 2:8-11; Rev21:23-25, 22:5; Ps. 27:1, 119: 105, 130; Prov. 4:18-19.
When Jesus walked this earth, He made this exclusive claim: “I am the Light of the world”. This was not a mere positive confession, as if He saw being the light of the world as something admirable. His was not a delusion of confessing Himself into what He was not. Yes, that exactly was what He is: His very essence. By Him, the entire universe knows God the Father, and acknowledges Him. He Himself is the wisdom of God who gives enlightenment to every created thing –from the highest hierarchy of angels to the tiny ants that crawl. John the Beloved declared: God is Light… and He is in the Light. Paul an Apostle spoke of God as dwelling in unapproachable light. By these declarations, the true doctrine of divine essence stares us in the face: that both the Father and the Son share the same essence; and the Father dwells in the Son who is light, Jesus the Christ.
Jesus further claimed exclusively that without Him, the entire creation gropes in darkness –thick one! Yes, the sun shines, the moon gleams and the stars glint. But without this Light of the world, we all are in thick darkness. As the Light, He alone unfolds the nature of God and the proper view of life to mortals’ eyes. Those who do not acknowledge the Light keep only wrinkled minds with a distorted worldview. When Solomon saw only futility in life, and no light beyond the gloom of the grave, it was not because he lacked sufficient intellect to appreciate his world or he could not see with sunlight. Solomon’s gaze shifted from the Light of the world –the only meaningful essence in existence. Likewise, when our contemporary geniuses say there is no God, it is only because they have not turned to the Light Jesus who enables mankind to see God. Apart from Jesus the true light, God did not design our eyes to be properly enlightened by any other light –science, rigorous thinking, contemplation of the cosmos … Every other light is darkness –thick one!
And yet further, He launched another exclusive claim: “if anyone walks in the day, He does not stumble because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in him.” The factor for stumbling is not the nature of the streets walked. The factor is whether light is or not. For both He who stumbles and one who does not, the road of this life is crooked and dark, full of potholes, hills and valleys. But for the one whose steps this light directs, the way appears smooth. Though he too has occasions for stumbling, the light that shines shows the way of escape. And even if he stumbles, he could see the cause and learn to walk properly. Conversely, he who abides in darkness does not know what makes him stumble or where he is going. If we sin, hate, envy, cheat, covet or hate God or are given to impure thoughts, it is not that we lack the will or knowledge to do good. It is not because we dwell among bad people in an unfavourable area. It is a clear evidence of not having the light, or daily walking in him.
Those who believe Jesus is not God and not eternal may seize one best opportunity to validate their claim: let them believe in him now so as to gain entrance to eternity. And from their observation of his person and role in eternity they may make their everlasting conclusion of him. But even now, we know that in heaven, no sun shall shine but He, the light of the universe, this Jesus whom we preach remains the person of the Father expressed in the light.
