And the number one spot goes to…
Okay, I admit it. I have a weakness for countdown shows. Therefore, it shouldn't surprise anyone that I recorded the recent broadcast of 101 Objects That Changed the World. The program featured beloved objects such as the Rubik's Cube, Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers, and the Hope Diamond. Whether singular or universal, each iconic object stirred my memory banks. Even the everyday items like wedding rings, coins, and credit cards, had to spark a response from the average viewer. As the countdown neared its end, my husband and I debated the final outcome. We settled on the Cross of Jesus, but in the end, the number one spot was given to the Bible. How poignant—Our Creator’s written word has changed the world; the same world that he spoke into existence, in the beginning.
Throughout the ages, God has faithfully communicated his message to his people. In the Old Testament, he commanded Adam, rebuked Satan, and warned Cain. He instructed Noah, called Abraham, and empowered Moses. He awakened Samuel, chastised Saul and confronted David. He whispered to Elijah, commissioned Isaiah and stopped Balaam. In the New Testament, he blessed Mary, equipped his disciples and taught the masses. Each account, along with many others depicts the various and unique ways that God speaks.
In ancient times, God often spoke audibly to the listener. Sometimes he relayed his message through angels, prophets, dreams or visions. In the New Testament era, God spoke through Jesus and then through believers. Today, by the power of his Holy Spirit, God speaks through his written word. He reveals himself and his ways throughout the inspired pages of Scripture. He speaks ancient words of history, poetry and prophecy, and these intimate words are freely spoken to all who seek his voice.
Before I understood the truth of God’s salvation message, I attempted to understand the Bible on my own. I usually started with the book of Genesis, and continued reading until I lapsed into utter confusion somewhere in the book of Leviticus. Sadly, the foreign words made no sense to me at all, and I felt defeated. Thankfully, God understood my plight and illuminated his truth in a way that I could understand. Simply put, God changed my heart with his written word, and he can do the same for you.
There are many study Bibles on the market today, but one rises above the rest—the God Speaks Study Bible.
For years, Richard Mull has faithfully answered God’s call to equip people to hear God’s voice. His passion for discipleship has finally come to fruition in the form of the God Speaks Study Bible. This God-given work of love is the newest and most exciting way to look at Scripture. It cleverly color-codes every passage where God speaks, making it easy for the reader to connect with God on a more intimate basis.
• Purple is used whenever God speaks in the first person.
• Blue is used when Angels speak on God's behalf or when God speaks through visions or dreams.
• Green is used when a passage talks about God speaking.
• Brown is used when men speak on God's behalf in the third person.
• Red is used for the words of Jesus.
• Gold is used for every miracle and all the Acts of God in Scripture.
God’s salvation message depends on our ability to hear his voice. For the sake of our own salvation, and for the salvation of others we must hear him. God’s earnest cry can be heard in the Old Testament whenever we read, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength (Deut. 6:3-5).” In the New Testament, Jesus reinforces God’s yearning every time we read, “Whoever has ears, let them hear.” These words appear six times in the Gospels and eight times in the book of Revelation.
The movement begins now. Whether you are a seeker, a new Christian or a seasoned Bible Scholar, everyone benefits from hearing God’s voice. Add the God Speaks Study Bible to your daily reading, and you will be well on your way to experiencing God in a more intimate way.
Want to help promote the reading of God's word and encourage people to learn how to hear God's voice? Imagine a color-coded study Bible and multi-media application highlighting when God speaks to you. Operation Light Force (OLF) is a ministry devoted to equipping people to do what Jesus did, setting captives free, healing and preaching. Richard Mull is the President and Founder of OLF and the General Editor of the God Speaks Bible and many other books. He was featured on TV and in the media. Help us spread the word.
