It has been said that the Gospel of John is a “Come and See” gospel. In John 1: 35-39 we read this: “Again on the morrow, John and two from his disciples stood. And looking at Jesus walking, he said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God!’ And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus. But having seen them following, Jesus said to them, ‘What do you seek?’ And they said to Him, ‘Rabbi (which being translated is called Teacher), where do You stay?’ He said to them, ‘Come and see.’” When Jesus asked them, “What do you seek?” he wasn’t asking, “What are you looking for?” The word here means, “What is your heart’s desire?” And the word “see” doesn’t mean come and take a look. It means come and know with certainty. Here, they obviously “saw” something remarkable because they went from calling Jesus Rabbi or teacher to Lord and Messiah in a very short time.
The next time we read, it is in John 1:46, 47: “Philip finds Nathaniel and said to him, ‘We have found the One of whom Moses wrote in the Law and the Prophets, Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.’ And Nathaniel said to him, ‘Can any good thing be out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.’” And upon “seeing,” Nathaniel became a devoted disciple.
We read it next in John 4: 25-29: “The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming, the One called Christ. When that One comes, He will announce to us all things.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I AM! The One speaking to you.’ Then the woman left her water pot and went away into the city and said to the men, ‘Come and see a Man who told me all things, whatever I did. Is this One not the Christ?’” The woman at the well “saw” something, because she went from being a shunned adulteress to a passionate evangelist in one short meeting.
Finally, we read in John 11:25-34: “Jesus said to Martha, ‘I am the Resurrection and the Life. The one believing into Me, though he dies, he shall live. Do you believe this?’ She said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God who comes into the world.’ And He said, ‘Where have you put him?’ They said to Him, ‘Lord, come and see.’” Here, they wanted Jesus to “see”…to know in fullness the loss of Lazarus. But He had something else for them to “see.” Jesus, with this one act, would confirm He was indeed the Son of God, that He had power over death and life and gave them a foretaste of what was to come a few short days later. And when the Resurrection and the Life appeared three days after crucifixion and death; Martha and Mary (who were already devoted friends and believers) were filled with a knowing that changed them and everyone they came in contact with forever.
So, for all those who believe Christians are at best deluded, that the Bible is a well-written fairy-tale and nobody walks on water or rises from the dead; I simply invite you to not merely take a look but to “Come and See.”
