Growing older but not wiser
Wisdom, what is it?
According to the definition it’s the following:
The ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight.
2. Common sense; good judgment: "It is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things" (Henry David Thoreau).
3.
a. The sum of learning through the ages; knowledge: "In those homely sayings was couched the collective wisdom of generations" (Maya Angelou).
b. Wise teachings of the ancient sages.
4. A wise outlook, plan, or course of action.
5. Wisdom Bible Wisdom of Solomon.
What is Wisdom according to the Bible? I will focus on the Proverbs only, but the Bible is filled with identifying Wisdom is several ways. All lead to one thing you better get it because without it you will be lost.
Pro 1:2 To learn wisdom and moral instruction, and to discern wise counsel.
Pro 1:3 To receive moral instruction in skillful living, in righteousness, justice, and equity.
Pro 1:6 To discern the meaning of a proverb and a parable, the sayings of the wise and their riddles.
Pro 1:7 Fearing the Lord is the beginning of moral knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Pro 1:20 Wisdom calls out in the street, she shouts loudly in the plazas;
Pro 1:23 If only you will respond to my rebuke, then I will pour out my thoughts to you and I will make my words known to you.
Pro 1:28 Then they will call to me, but I will not answer; they will diligently seek me, but they will not find me.
Pro 1:33 But the one who listens to me will live in security, and will be at ease from the dread of harm.
Pro 2:2 by making your ear attentive to wisdom, and by turning your heart to understanding,
Pro 2:4 if you seek it like silver, and search for it like hidden treasure,
Pro 2:6 For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
Pro 2:7 He stores up effective counsel for the upright, and is like a shield for those who live with integrity,
Pro 2:10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and moral knowledge will be attractive to you.
Pro 2:12 to deliver you from the way of the wicked, from those speaking perversity,
Pro 2:16 to deliver you from the adulteress, from the sexually loose woman who speaks flattering words;
Pro 3:7 Do not be wise in your own estimation; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
Pro 3:13 Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who obtains understanding.
Pro 3:14 For her benefit is more profitable than silver, and her gain is better than gold.
Pro 3:15 She is more precious than rubies, and none of the things you desire can compare with her.
Pro 3:18 She is like a tree of life to those who obtain her and everyone who grasps hold of her will be blessed.
Pro 3:19 By wisdom the Lord laid the foundation of the earth; he established the heavens by understanding.
Pro 3:21 My child, do not let them escape from your sight; safeguard sound wisdom and discretion.
Pro 4:5 Acquire wisdom, acquire understanding; do not forget and do not turn aside from the words I speak.
Pro 4:6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will guard you.
Pro 4:7 Wisdom is supreme – so acquire wisdom, and whatever you acquire, acquire understanding!
You can see according to the Bible that wisdom is referred to in several different ways. The bottom line is it is more valued then the greatest riches on earth. So, if we follow the Word on wisdom we can see that it is very important and if you don’t have it more or less you’re a fool. So how do we obtain the wisdom that Bible refers too.
Pro 9:10 The beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord, and acknowledging the Holy One is understanding.
Fearing the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. So we should start from this point.
Why should we fear a Lord that is all Loving and caring and all knowing. We tend to fear things that are only earthly but not Holy and not of this earth. Why would the Bible say fear not 365 times but yet say the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the lord.
Prov 3:11-12 (NIV) My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Prov 15:5 (NIV) A fool spurns his father's discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.
Not sure about anyone else that reads this but the fear of my earthly father was real. Why? He was a loving man, but when you did something wrong you know you going to be disciplined. Well If Abba is our Father, why would he not do the same for us. My father was looking to discipline me when I was acting out, doing wrong, not following direction, same for our Heavenly Father. He love us and wants the best for us and if we live a life that is full of our own ways, wondering through the woods lost, He is going to do what he can to get back on track.
Now are we willing to listen to His rebuke, His instructions, His Loving guidance? That’s up to each of us. What we do with the Word is up to us, harden not your heart and listen to His word and it Guide you through all parts of your life.
What if we have hardship after hardship? Well I would say it’s time to stop and look at your life. How are you living it in compared to how Almighty God wants you to live it? Is He trying to teach you something but you have not yet learned what He is trying to teach you (this is my belief). Think about it in math terms, when you can’t get a problem a formula you ask your teacher and the teachers explains (some better than others) but with the word of God it’s as clear as you can get and there are many teachers to ask “what does the bible say about this, or that”. If you listen to the instructions of the teacher you’ll get the problem solved, but the key is are you willing to listen. If you’re not, well then you get an F, and you have to do it all over again. Meaning, now you will be thought what you were just thought all over again and if you fail again you will you will keep doing it until you pass.
I believe this same principal is with God’s word. Learn it from His 1st teaching and you’ll gain wisdom and move on to the next area in your life to grow. You’ll never be able to grow if you’re unwilling to. I look back in my life at times I was running to fast, or living loosely. I see it so clearly now, but at that the time would never have seen it because I was running with stopping to hear Gods word spoken directly into my heart. Some of the best wisdom I have received is to slowdown and sit in silence so you do not drown out God speaking directly to you, let me tell you He will and DOES!
Wisdom is lacking from the world we live in today to the point people are so smart they are stupid. Many may be thinking what is he talking about so smart they are stupid. Well, many can read through several book and gain an education, and this is important. However, Wisdom is different than smarts is an ability to know what to do in every situation in life. Life skills comes from wisdom. Many have heard the phrase “with age comes wisdom”. Well, the nicest way I can say it is, yea, not so much. This is why I personally pray for wisdom daily, and to grant me wisdom beyond my years, I pray this same prayer for the 4 gifts God has given to me on loan.
Solomon Demonstrates His Wisdom
3:16 Then two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 3:17 One of the women said, “My master, this woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby while she was with me in the house.3:18 Then three days after I had my baby, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one else in the house except the two of us. 3:19 This woman’s child suffocated during the night when she rolled on top of him. 3:20 She got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side, while your servant was sleeping. She put him in her arms, and put her dead son in my arms. 3:21 I got up in the morning to nurse my son, and there he was, dead! But when I examined him carefully in the morning, I realized it was not my baby.” 3:22 The other woman said, “No! My son is alive; your son is dead!” But the first woman replied, “No, your son is dead; my son is alive.” Each presented her case before the king.
3:23 The king said, “One says, ‘My son is alive; your son is dead,’ while the other says, ‘No, your son is dead; my son is alive.’” 3:24 The king ordered, “Get me a sword!” So they placed a sword before the king. 3:25 The king then said, “Cut the living child in two, and give half to one and half to the other!” 3:26 The real mother spoke up to the king, for her motherly instincts were aroused. She said, “My master, give her the living child! Whatever you do, don’t kill him!” But the other woman said, “Neither one of us will have him! Let them cut him in two!” 3:27 The king responded, “Give the first woman the living child; don’t kill him. She is the mother.” 3:28 When all Israel heard about the judicial decision which the king had rendered, they respected the king, for they realized that he possessed supernatural wisdom to make judicial decisions.
This is wisdom, to make a decision of what to do in a real life situation on the spur of the moment. He did not need to do a DNA check; he did not need to have the women go before a jury of 12. He was granted Wisdom by our Lord from his pleading for it.
3:7 Now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in my father David’s place, even though I am only a young man and am inexperienced. 3:8 Your servant stands among your chosen people; they are a great nation that is too numerous to count or number. 3:9 So give your servant a discerning mind so he can make judicial decisions for your people and distinguish right from wrong. Otherwise no one is able to make judicial decisions for this great nation of yours.” 3:10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon made this request. 3:11 God said to him, “Because you asked for the ability to make wise judicial decisions, and not for long life, or riches, or vengeance our enemies, 3:12 I grant your request, and give you a wise and discerning mind superior to that of anyone who has preceded or will succeed you. 3:13 Furthermore, I am giving you what you did not request – riches and honor so that you will be the greatest king of your generation. 3:14 If you follow my instructions by obeying my rules and regulations, just as your father David did, then I will grant you long life.”
What comes to mind to me is what an Amazing God we have the privilege to serve. Ask, seek and knock and it will be granted if you as in Christ’s name. We need to seek things like Solomon, Wisdom is granted and not just given. Get right with the Lord, Seek His wisdom, pray for it , search for it, never let it leave your side. Seek after it like it was a matter of life and death. Remember that the beginning of obtaining wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Seek His face and fear His wrath, It is real and all powerful. It is done out of love, but Love nonetheless, I do not want Gods wrath on me.
Get wisdom and watch your life be blessed.
To God I give the glory for His teaching and this writing. Grant all who read this an ability to seek out Your Wisdom Lord and may they find it and never let it go. May they have soften heart to receive your message, when they do may you please bless them and keep them, may you make Your face to shine down upon them and grant them the peace that passes all earthly understanding. Amen
