I know I may be late in saying this but I’ll say it anyway; I’m glad the whole Mayan calendar thing didn’t happen as some speculated. I’m glad to still be alive. The truth is I wasn’t ever worried about it anyway. As scripture clearly points out, no one knows exactly when the earth or time as we know it will end.
“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” (Matthew 25:13 KJV)
It was quite popular throughout last year for many to claim that the world was going to come to an end. Some even slapped dates and times on to their predictions. All, however, did not come to pass, as we realize because we’re still here. So we look at these things and these individuals who made these claims as being rather pathetic. Yet still some of these predictions will carry on and again still others will be wrong.
Does that mean that the world is not going to come to an end at all? I personally say that it will come to an end, just how or rather when I’m not quite so sure.
“But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” (2-Peter 3:7 KJV)
You see, based on that scripture, the world will eventually come to an end and actually a very dramatic one as the scripture indicates. But there’s more to this story if we keep reading from scripture:
“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” (2-Peter 3:8-14 KJV)
Many point to these scriptures and say that it hasn’t happened yet and it’s been nearly 2000 years since Jesus’ disciple Peter said it and it’s quite pathetic that anyone would believe in such nonsense as the end of the world. However, those not even calling themselves Christian will speak about things like Armageddon or the Apocalypse and the end of the age. What this tells me is that people in general sense that something cataclysmic is about to happen. People are looking for signs to let them know that it’s on its way and in fact they are eager for it and deep down desiring it. Why? Because I believe that its origin is part of God’s very design and since we are all basically spiritual beings stemming also from God’s design (whether we acknowledge it or not) it has been programmed within the human psyche. This is also why I believe that so many have come out attempting to predict when this transition will occur but without a proper relationship with God they have been shown to be in error.
But Rick several have proclaimed to know God and have even shown themselves to be quite devout Christians, some might say to me. While I can not argue about anyone’s personal relationship with Christ, I can refer to the scripture we have already pointed out indicating that no one knows when God will allow the world to end. God has indeed given us signs to know when we are close to this happening (just read chapter 24 of the Gospel of Matthew and you’ll understand what I mean) and these signs may have confused and convinced some that it must be right around the corner.
While I will agree that it seems based upon what is going on in our world today that we must be approaching the end of things as we understand them, I believe it is going to be just the start of something new and wonderful beyond that point (hence the promise of new heavens and a new earth).
Whether you choose to believe it is totally up to you. You can scoff at all those who have been wrong in the past and count them as pathetic or you can simply realize that maybe their source was wrong. If you rely upon God as the source to tell us when or if something is going to happen, you can trust that He is always right. After all the one who created time and all that it applies to can certainly tell us what will come to pass, this is what we call prophetic.
So are the signs we see around us causing us to live pathetic lives of discouragement and complacency or are they speaking to us of prophetic fulfillment and exciting change about to come. I would encourage you today to see even the negative things as a positive, after all when something reaches the end or the bottom of the barrel the only direction remaining is up!
God Bless – Rick
