TALK IS CHEAP!
What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Psalm 34:12-13;
Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3;
A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence. He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Proverbs 13:2-3;
It takes greater efforts to keep silent than to talk; talk is cheap, so goes the popular saying! Talking is one major way people normally express their feelings, emotions, intentions, thoughts, ideas, desires, likes and dislikes. In fact, of all means of expressions available to human beings, talking is the mostly engaged, except in babies and toddlers whose faculties have not been sufficiently developed for speech. Words, whether spoken or written have no limits in the effects they could produce either positively or negatively! Just as every seed has the capacity to germinate, grow and multiply itself, words, whether spoken or written, possess great capacity to produce definite results. Unfortunately many people, including believers, do not take cognizance of this fact each time they open their mouth wide without control to say all manners of things, after all talk is cheap!
No force on earth has ever been known to possess greater power than the force of words. By words, battles are triggered, and by words, battles are conquered; by words, a man’s countenance is brightened up, and by words a man’s spirit is crushed; by words crises are triggered and by words turbulent oceans within the souls of men are calmed, such is the power of the tongue! The tongue is indeed the smallest organ of the body, it is a boneless tissue but has the ability to break, even the bones of the strongest of all men! It’s sad that majority are reckless in the use of their tongues, and this has brought upon them untold agonies. If a man cannot keep his tongue under locks and keys as instructed by the scriptures, he is not only digging his grave, he’s also paving his own way to eternal destruction because the scripture says every idle and careless word spoken by a man shall be brought into account before the judgment seat of the Almighty God!
Honestly it’s almost effortless for anyone to err by words. The bible says ‘For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body’. (James 3:2). One major proof of spiritual maturity in a believer is how much control he or she has over his or her tongue. Under certain situations and circumstances, a person may be seriously pressed to speak or respond without control, especially in an attempt to prove a point, but someone with a sense of discipline will certainly realize that it is better not to speak than be sorry for speaking! From the life of our Lord Jesus, we see many examples of how He chose His words and bridled His tongues even in the face of grievous provocations from the Pharisees and the Jews who at various times were out to find accusations against Him. Up to the time that the Lord was crucified, He never spoke a bitter or harsh word even for once!
Those of us who think we have the freedom to engage our lips as we please should always think about the costs. The cheapest commodity is words, but ironically, nothing in life costs a man more than his own words! As a result of reckless use of the tongues, people are bringing themselves under curses, marriages are breaking, relationships are collapsing, thriving organizations are crumbling, nations are going into wars, and generational enmity is brewing! A man’s word can turn out to be the dagger that pierces his soul and tears apart his world! But for everyone who is mindful of eternity, it’s very important we seek the Lord for total sanctification of our tongues so as to escape agonies in life and eternity. By seeking divine help with determination on our part, our uncircumcised lips (like the lips of Prophet Isaiah before the Lord sanctified them), can receive total cleansing so that they will begin to bear wholesome fruits for us and for everyone around us. We must learn to keep a guard on our lips, TALK IS NOT CHEAP!
