If you’ve ever been tested in school on any kind of sliding scale, you know it’s hard not to feel competitive with others. Matthew 20 tells the story about the landowner who needed extra laborers and went to the marketplace to get them. He did this at various times during the day to get the day’s work done. Notice, however, when it came time at the end of the day to pay his laborers that the landowner gave instructions to pay the last ones he’d hired first the same wage. Jesus told this parable the way He did on purpose because had the first hired been paid first they would have walked away not realizing that the last ones hired received exactly the same wage.
Jesus was making the point that we don’t need to be worried about the next guys business. If an agreement to work for a certain amount for the day was made and others received the same wage even though they worked less, it makes the point that we don’t gain favor with God by what we accomplish, only by what He accomplished on the cross of Calvary. His Grace is free to all who are humble enough to repent of sin and receive it. The same truth goes for working in God’s kingdom - each has their own gifts and are on a different timeline than everyone else. We should not judge what He’s doing in someone else’s life.
We need to also do what the landowner did in seeing each other’s value through spiritual eyes. God is the original advocate for the underdog and it’s important to see only ones self when standing in the presence of God. His scale is different than our sliding scale because in the balance it weighs your sin that condemns you and takes the weight of the blood of Jesus to set those scales in balance. God does not rank sin and since all fall short of the glory of God because of sin, there is no sliding scale with God. Jesus' blood cancels your debt in the sight of a righteous God whose desires for you to accept His free gift of Salvation so you can live eternally with Him in heaven.
