One the greatest verses we Christians encourage each other with is First John 4:4 that says “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” The setup for this passage is a warning that we should indeed be as wise as serpents and harmless as doves by testing those things in the world that might appear to be good, but aren’t necessarily of God. Chapter four begins, “do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” One of Satan’s greatest tricks is the old bait and switch. He’ll try to catch you off guard by feeding you something that tastes like cotton candy but sours your stomach once you’ve consumed it.
The key to discerning the difference before you partake is in this verse in First John 4:4 “He who is in you…” If you are listening to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit you’ll hear Him guiding you to those things that are Godly and give you a red flag feeling of caution when you need to stay away from, or not take into your spirit, those things that would conflict with the truth of God’s word. Verse three gives the ultimate litmus test for knowing that the source is honestly of God, “every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.” The death, burial, and especially the resurrection, ascension, and return of Christ are fundamental elements that substantiate the truth.
He who is in you cannot be greater than he who is in the world if you are a Christian in name only. The whole point of the Christian faith has to do with the other guy. It’s always about the other guy. When you receive Christ it’s like a spiritual domino effect. In the relay race of life, it’s important to pass your faith on so you’ll be emulating what Christ did when He was willing to sacrifice Himself on the cross for the sin of the world. I encourage you to walk your talk in God’s truth and forgiveness so you can stand apart from the world and glorify God in the process.
