LIVING IN THE SPIRIT
"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 1 Cor. 6:19
"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper that He may abide with you forever--even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him because He dwells with you and will be in you."John 14:16, 17
No special place or time, no special occasion--sometimes maybe a little more concentrated rather than purely unconscious, but always aware of the presence of the Holy Spirit, the child of God ought to be. How wonderful and past human understanding that is! For many years I compartmentalized the assembly of the saints, special occasions, lectureships, etc., as special times in which to recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit. What a terrible ignorant loss that was! I finally came to a deeper understanding when I read over and over again that the aged Apostle John, exiled on the Isle of Patmos all alone, was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day.
The easy-going, no special awareness of the presence of the Holy Spirit takes some getting used to, for me half a lifetime! We need to give up the self-conscious feeling that his Presence is like a special guest and recognize that He is like our breath: always there. So much so that when things happen in our lives, we don't have to say, "What would the Spirit have me do?" No, because He is the breath we breathe, we will know: just be still and listen. Scripture clearly teaches that He will be in us and lead us, and we will recognize this more and more until there is no doubt.
"He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.' But this He spoke concerning the Spirit whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified."
The Holy Spirit fills our hearts and directs our lives. He is a powerful Gift to guide us safely home. Don't hesitate, examine or question. Just know that you have a Life Guide without peer, a Gift from our Father. The Holy Spirit is real. He is not some ghost-like figure that fades in and out depending on where one is. He is a Gift as surely as life is a gift.
"Then Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let everyone of you be baptized into the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit.'"
Acts 2:38
May God bless the reading and life application of His words.
