Christian Living
For the last few weeks I have worked a profound statement into some of my sermons and lectures. At first glance it doesn't seem like much, but upon reflection it could change many a life and ministry. It leaped off of a page in the fall 2011 issue of Leadership Journal which featured Dark Nights of the Soul.
As a pastor for the bulk of my adult life I know the truth of this statement by John Ortberg as I have spent many a day and night wishing I had this or that type of person to help in the ministry in certain key areas. As you read the statement you will see why Ortberg's line leaps into your mind or heart, perhaps both:
"Do not ask for more fascinating and important people to be part of your church. Just start by loving whomever is there."
I am certain John touched a universal button in a leader's heart. This button is real, I do not know exactly why, other than we forget the leadership choices of Jesus. We, all of us Christians, will be more effective in the long run if we are willing to make the best of whom the Lord sends our way and trust the Holy Spirit to enable. It is then that God gets the glory. I like this verse from David's song of deliverance in 2 Samuel 22:33 "God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect."
