Devotionals
By example Jesus taught that the best defense is none at all. He stood before Pilot and stayed silent because He knew He was not guilty and was without sin. The Lord understood He was the perfect sacrifice for the very ones who were judging Him. Do you sometimes feel judged by others? Do you rise up to defend yourself to make things right because you feel wronged? Jesus was trying to encourage the apostles to follow His example in not trying to defend themselves or even their Lord. Everything He taught them was not about striking back at enemies but turning the other cheek.
The Lord could react passively because He knew that if He acknowledged the foolish words of His critics by trying to defend Himself, that they’d be glorified in their own eyes. Jesus’ trust in His Father’s will for His life gave Him the courage to face His adversity without being offended. This was evident by His own words on the cross “forgive them Father, they know not what they do.” This takes great love.
In the following analogy Jesus instructed His disciples in the twenty-second chapter of Luke to go and preach the good news, taking no money with them and only the sandals they were wearing, and His Father in heaven would provide their every need. In others words “trust in God.” To the contrary in another matter, they disobeyed Jesus’ very own teachings by taking up arms to defend Him when Judas betrayed his master with a kiss. Of course we know Jesus healed the ear of the High Priest’s servant who’d come to witness Jesus’ capture and His going peacefully with the Roman soldiers. "Not by might, not by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord" Jesus trusted His Father and so should we.
God knew the victory wouldn’t be won by defiance, but by the Holy Spirit raising Christ from the dead to gain the victory for all who believe on Him. You see, this was the trap Satan walked into when Jesus defeated death so humanity could be delivered from hell into eternal life. So delight that the fight was made right the night God’s blood was shed and ran red for you.
