Ramblings of an Old Man: True Love
I sent a greeting card once, long ago, that stated on it: “True Love is willing to share the rain while waiting for the sun to shine.” I wonder, did the author of that saying mean something so simple as just standing there sharing an umbrella, waiting for the rain to stop, the clouds to roll away, and the sun to shine once more (assuming it was daylight!)? Well, I hope I would be compassionate enough to share my umbrella in a pouring rain, even with a stranger, but that would not constitute “true love”. I would like to think there was something a little more in depth insinuated here, what they may call now-a-days as thinking outside the box.
When I first read the card, my thought was not on the actual physical aspect of water, but rather, the dimensions of time and space; the space of time which the word “waiting” would encompass. I reference my thoughts to a situation between two people that seem to wait for life’s oddities to filter out into some semblance of order that we think must exist before we can enter into a daily routine of husband and wife. Must a life have “order” and “stability” in it before it is allowed to attempt a daily relationship?
Do all successful relationships always remain in “order” and have “stability” after the ceremony? Relationships are always in flux, a constant state of change, and flowing into endless different areas. But let us get back to the card. Where does the fine line of sharing enter into this equation? Think beyond the physical aspects and think metaphorically!
Yes, I know big word! But all I’m suggesting is to think of the rain as the many pressures in life that weigh us down every day, such as: debt, schooling, job, situations, locality, or fears. Now, in our “metaphorical” state of mind, the sun would represent the passing of all of these aforementioned “rains”, our problems are over , we are out of the woods, now we can have a proper relationship! But wait! If that’s true, then where does the sharing aspect enter in? If there is no sharing then does it not stand to reason that there is no true love?
This now brings me back to my previous statement about the “waiting” part. If true love is obtained by the willingness to share “while waiting”, while waiting …for what? Right, the rain to end, the problems to be solved, then that means you have been, or should have been allowed, to share in not only the good times or good things in life, but also to have been allowed to share in the bad as well! By sharing the bad with the good that represents the “true love”!
What would be the concept of “true love” if it was only allowed or accepted during the good times? “I will only love you (or allow you to love me!) when there are good times, or no problems”! How absurd!! How inconceivable!! But, one must be willing to open up their heart and life to allow that other significant one in! You claim to love them. If that’s true, then prove it by willingly letting them in to share in all aspects of life, rain or shine! Why else would the vows of matrimony speak of both sides of the issues: through richer or poorer, sickness or health, till death us do part. True love does not wait only for the sun to shine again, but will also encompass and be very caring during any rains!
