Poetry
When you are a child,
you are free
because you are not aware of time.
When you become an adolescent
You press into time,
Thinking,
"Only time is keeping me from
Self-determination,
and the
Pleasures of Life".
When you are in your twenties
You begin to worry about time,
asking yourself, and others,
"When will I find the one?"
"When will I Know Who I Am?"
"How long will it be until I have the life I desire".
You may even wrestle with time and try to subdue it.
By the time you reach your 30's
You may discover some peace,
having realized,
"I cannot control time",
"Time is not my enemy, it is my companion"
"I am sowing seeds in time that will carry the past into the future"
"I can only live one day at a time"
However, from your mid thirties until fifty-something
You may become so busy
Working
Raising adolescent children
Living
That you will say to yourself,
"If only I had some time"
"Where does the time go?"
And you will say to others
"I am sorry, I do not have time"
Suddenly
Sometime in your late fifties or sixties you may begin to ask,
"What have I done with my time?"
"What have I accomplished?"
"What will remain of my time spent living?"
"Will anyone remember me?"
Then you may make one last effort to grapple with time,
To change your direction,
To reinvest you remaining time
In some new meaningful, fulfilling way.
Perhaps, in your latter days
Having done what you have with youth,
And recommending to the young, what you can,
From your distant perspective,
While,
Occasionally sorting through your memories,
Sharing treasures,
Pleasures
Sorrows
Jewels of Wisdom
(hopefully not clinging bitterly to losses suffered at the hands of time)
You may reach the precipice,
Ascend the pinnacle,
Stare into the chasm known as
The End of Time, or
The Valley of the Shadow of Death.
You may quake and quiver and weep,
Or maybe.......
Looking forward
Like dew embracing the sunrise
Laying aside the old tattered cloak
Leap up into the wind
Spreading wings of
Infinite
Discovery
Celebrated together
Within flocks
Of tribal familiarity
Like stellar clouds
Spiraling throughout the cosmos.
