Matthew 14:28
KJV - And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
NIV - "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied,"tell me to come to you on the water."
Have you ever been afraid to take the next step closer to God? I am. I am afraid He may see my unworthiness and that I will fail. Even amidst the storms of life, we may feel more comfortable tossed about in a little boat, clinging to the side, and so frightened by the thought of plunging into the unknown. We may ask God, "Why should I get out of the boat?"
Despite the preceding verse ".... Be of good cheer; It is I; be not afraid."
we may still be daunted by the task God has set before us. As for our unworthiness, He already knows that and stands ready to empower us to overcome our greatest fears. Christ knows that without Him we are nothing, but with Him, all things are possible.
Just as Peter responded to Jesus' invitation, we may be called upon to ignore the wind and rain, keep our eyes upon Him, and go where He wants us to be. As peril mounts along the way, keep your focus on Him, and not the raging waves.
In our walk with Christ, we should not be clinging to the side of a rickety boat, but getting out to get closer to Him. It may be scary. We may at times choose to focus on the danger rather than the Savior, but He is there to pull us out.
We serve a mighty God! Far from the maddening crowd, in the midst of the sea when the disciples left Jesus on a mountain to pray, Peter had the gumption to be alone with Christ where no one else dared to go. If we put our faith and trust in Him, we will climb out of the boat too.
