It was a sudden and clear call. It came suddenly with a chill weather on the day when the US celebrated Labor Day. It was a sudden change in weather. The previous day the heat was touching hundred degrees. suddenly it dropped to sixties on the Labor Day. I felt the change in my heart and body. It swept over me with a chilly wind giving me a new experience. I could hear the call clearly. The Autumn has come.
Autumn is really a wonderful season. It reminds us the next season, the arrival of winter. Autumn prepares nature for the winter sleep. Trees are painted and bursting with colors, showing the magnificent beauty which is going to change. They are soon dropped. Fallen leaves crunch under our feet and remind us that everything passes away after some time. The scent of the wet soil around us reminds us the regeneration of old vegetation.
Autumn is the season of love
Autumn is the season of love. It reminds us those who have gone before us and those who are going to fill this earth in due course of time. Every day in life is a link of love. It links us with generations. Yes, Autumn is God's phone call through nature to reflect about life. Not only human life, but every life in nature, animals and plants. It is the season when we enjoy the sunny afternoons and feel the warmth of our dear Father.
It is in this season that the Christians celebrate "All Souls Day" and "All Saints Day". Halloween is celebrated in this season reminding us the call of God in nature. It calls us to think of God's providence and thank Him for everything. Turkeys and dinners may fill our stomachs but they should not fail to fill our hearts with love and friendship.
A day to love every creation
The feast of a saint who loved nature very much is celebrated in this Autumn season. It is fitting that the Christians everywhere celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4 by having their pets blessed in the spirit of this patron saint of animals and ecology. He called humanity to honor every creation. St. Francis of Assisi believed and treated every living being, including animals and plants, with due respect and love. He could understand well the relationship of love between every living being.
Autumn blessing of pets
When Autumn arrives, there has been a traditional pet blessing custom in some places of the Catholic Church. There are processions of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses which are led to churches for a special ceremony called the "Blessing of Pets". This has been a custom where the Franciscan Friars have their houses. This is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures. He hails nature in his famous poem, "The Canticle of the Creatures." In that poem, St. Francis of Assisi invites "Brother Sun", "Sister Moon", "Brother Wind", "Sister Water" and all the fraternal creatures to join with him in praising God.
Autumn is the season to sing the glory of God. It is the link of life and death. It is the phone call from our Beloved Father.
