Encouragement
Even though the Prophet Jeremiah wept over the recalcitrant Israelites, he reminded them, and us, that there is hope.
"Remember my affliction and roaming, the wormwood and the gall. My soul still remembers and sinks within me. This I recall to my mind: therefore I have hope. Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed because His compassions fail not. THEY ARE NEW EVERY MORNING. Great is His faithfulness. 'The Lord is my portion,' says my soul. Therefore I hope in Him! The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul that seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord." Lamentations 23:19-26
The immediacy and everydayness of God's presence sometimes elude us. We forget His Omnipresence and grow impatient when prayers aren't answered quickly or to our liking. Jeremiah was really put out with the stiff-necked and stubborn sinning of the Israelites, but in this passage it seems as if he steps back and takes a better look at the situation--and finds grounds for hope. The Lord's mercies are new every morning and his compassions fail not. That should sustain unwavering hope in us also. A new day dawns, and it is God's vote of confidence in us: another chance to be all we can be, to do all we can do to honor our Father who is so faithful. He's always there to hold us steady, or to take us back repenting and reeking of the pigpen, or to go searching for the lost shivering little lamb out on the mountain. If we lived knowing and truly believing that God will never give up on us, our hearts couldn't hold the gratitude. And it's ours to believe: the sure basis of hope.
"God is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
