…He shall give you another Comforter. John 14:16
A little boy, from a very poor family, went to church when his mother was unable to go, and she asked him what the sermon was about. He replied, “The preacher said that God was going to give us an extra “bed quilt.” To the little boy, it meant warmth and rest, which was very important to the little boy, and gave him much peace. (Story from Dr. M.R.De Haan)
Now, we all know that the reference in the Scriptures is to the Holy Spirit, which Jesus was going to send to those who accept of Him. I sort of smiled when I read the child’s interpretation, and then a lot of thoughts came rushing in. The boy was not as far off as it seems. Surely the Holy Spirit does bring warmth and rest into our lives as we allow Him to take control of our lives.
The Holy Spirit can protect us from becoming cold and indifferent, and fill our lives with caring, and warmth in our thoughts and actions to others, He will be our protector from the onslaught of the enemy. (Satan)
He will help us when we put off our “clothing for the day, ” (our Spiritual armor,) and we can lay down in peace, knowing that we are a child of His care, and we will be protected from the wiles of the devil, as we lie down with perfect trust in Him who has never failed us yet. We will awaken renewed with our sense of security and safety as we re-dress in our armor, to face a new day. Our hearts will be warmed and refreshed as we search to follow God’s will.
Often times we need an extra quilt,
To warm our hearts toward God.
He has sent His Comforter
To guard the paths that we trod.
Sometimes our lives can be upset,
And we don’t know where to turn.
It’s then, we feel the Comforter,
And our ways, we can discern.
We are His helpless children
Who need guidance for each day.
And He will hold us in His arms
And never let us stray!
Prayer: Thank-you for providing us with a comforter to warm and protect our lives, and to lead us in the footsteps of Jesus. May we ever walk in the path upon which the soft, loving, comforter leads. Guide us that we might grow into light houses to spread the good news of Your eternal love and provision. Help us to appropriate all of the provisions that You have made to help us to be over comers. And yes, give us that understanding and faith as a little child that we might serve you. Thank You for all of the help that You give us daily, and guide us through the hard times in life that we need, to make us cling to You. Amen
