People are not born inherently bad. They are, however, born into circumstances that tend to push them into one direction or another. And everybody intuitively learns to love something: certain people, certain values, etc., and choices are incessant and compulsory. We, of necessity, make them every day. As we mature, they tend to become patterns that permeate all of our decisions. The peripherals may seem to take a different form, but essentially they are based on the same developing directions that solidify as we mature. Circumstances demand on a daily basis that unconscious questions be answered. Are people or things more important? At work, at play, all the time, one way or another, we answer that question by our behavior, and it is our choice. Eventually the answers take a decided turn, and lifelong patterns are established. And from a tiny root over a lifetime, one decision at a time, we become who we are.
All of this is to bring attention to a short, powerful and compelling verse of Scripture. The love of money (as opposed to the love of people) is the root of ALL kinds of evil (1 Tim. 6:10) Actual poison often works slowly but so effectively and subtly as not to be easily identified. And that's true of the love of money. Silently and viciously it works underground to destroy the very souls of humankind, ending eventually in the death of all that's right and good. It is the root of ALL kinds of evil, not some of it,but ALL of it. It begets every kind of evil, much of which we soon forget to associate with the deadly root. It slowly erodes character and silently takes so many forms that the deadly work is done--and never named. It poisons so slowly and so effectively that it often even masquerades as good in order to accomplish its nefarious ends. (The billionaires who contribute a small portion of their wealth to good causes while people starve are prime examples.) But it does eventually attack and destroy the human heart. Money is king. People are nowhere. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, no matter the mask it wears. It is the sharpest knife in the devil's drawer. Make no mistake: the love of God and people is all that counts in this world, or the next.
