My First Treasured Bible
Ruby and I got along very well. We went out for lunch or shopping together. Both of us felt very free to hang out or to chat with each other because all these days we maintained a pure friendship; we had nothing else in our mind.
One day, Ruby gave me a Chinese Bible. It was decorated with a feminine touch: wrapped with transparent plastic paper. Also, a hand-made bookmark was inserted beneath the wrapping paper. On the bookmark, she drew a horse and printed Psalm 145:14, “The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.” The horse was a wonderful illustration of God’s Words. Certainly, our Lord Almighty is our strength especially when we are weak. This verse also reminds me of the difficulties that we both went through with God's help.
“You drew the horse and made the bookmark?” I asked. She had a smile on her face as a response.
Since then, I started reading the Bible with the intention to find out more about God. To this day, I still have the Bible as my treasure.
Our Friendship Continued
I was very curious about how our friendship would become in the future; I wanted to develop a deeper friendship with Ruby; perhaps a romantic relationship, but I did not know what she thought.
One evening after school, we were on a train going home. I was thinking about asking her for dinner the following week. My heart was pounding as I was thinking about how to ask her, but I had to say it before she got off the train. Ruby would get off first because I lived farther north than she did. As the train conductor announced the next stop which was where she would get off, I quickly took this last opportunity to ask her. To my delight, she replied with a Yes. After saying good night to her and watching her leave the train, I was relieved and filled with joy. At that moment, I felt succeeded.
