Short Stories
For the remaining days of the semester, both still talked to each other but she kept a distance from him. The day before the Christmas break, Dewey asked her, “How did you do on the exam?”
“Um…pretty good.”
“You will be heading for Hong Kong next Monday, right?”
“Mmhmm.”
“May I drive you to the airport?”
That was the question she anticipated but she still suppressed her feelings and shook her head.
“The flight is 8:00 a.m., correct?” he asked.
She nodded.
“I will be there.”
She glanced at him once.
On the day of her departure, she constantly turned her head back and forth, expecting to see him. However, he did not show up. Disappointed, she boarded the plane after waving goodbye to her family.
Actually, Dewey was on his way but a car accident delayed his arrival. When he reached the airport, Rheanna was already on the plane flying to Hong Kong. Things became worse, because he did not ask for her Hong Kong’s contact information. Things became even worse when his computer malfunctioned when he intended to send her an email that day. Sleeplessly, he kept thinking of the girl, and a thought came to his mind. "Let me fly to Hong Kong to find her. She mentioned Yau…Yau Ma Tei. Yes, I will find her.” Two days later, he took a flight to the city.
Cold, Mid-December; Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong.
For two entire days after arrival, he looked for her in every church and every Christian organization but could not find any trace. The following evening after another long, exhausted day, he walked on the Temple Street. (Temple Street is a real street in Hong Kong. It is well known for its night market. The market starts at 2:00 p.m., and traffic is closed on the street at that time.)
In the middle of the street, there was a large crowd standing in front of a platform. As Dewey was wondering what it was all about, a man approached him from the side.
“American?”
“Yeah.”
“An American girl talking about Jesus last night. She very pretty. I come back to see her. Hurry; take a good spot.”
Dewey followed the man, thinking that the girl must be Rheanna. After he reached the platform, he glanced all over the place but the girl in his mind was not there. As he turned away from the crowd, he swung his head back and directed his gaze toward someone; someone he really wanted to embrace in his arms - Rheanna was standing on his far left, looking at him. The moment their eyes met, the girl blushed and looked down quickly. A feeling of joy of seeing him unexpectedly rose within her.
Dewey spoke in a very soft voice, ‘Rheanna, Rheanna.” And he walked up to her. “Hi, Rheanna, I’m so glad to see you here.”
She looked back up and cocked her head. “Hi, why are you here?”
“Um…Um…” He tried to find the right answer. But he couldn’t. “I came here for dinner.”
Then she giggled. “All the way from Chicago?” She knew that he flew to the city to see her but she did not initiate a second question to ask for the truth.
He gave her a smile and changed the subject. “Oh, I did go to the airport the other day but I was late because there was a car accident on the way.”
She spoke in a soft voice, “Okay.”
“I thought the preacher on the platform was you.”
“She is from another short-term mission organization. I came tonight to learn from her.”
“It’s too noisy here. Would you mind we go somewhere else?”
“Sure.”
Then they moved to one side of the street. Browsing around, Dewey said, “This is Yau Ma Tei, huh?”
“Mmhmm. See those stalls and carts on both sides of the street? They carry many items such as clothes, jewelry, toys, gifts…the list goes on and on.”
“There must be hundreds of them.”
“I guess so.”
“Hey, I looked for you in this area but no one had a clue.”
At that moment, the truth was revealed, and the girl lowered her head. A strong feeling of trust settled in her heart and caused a sweet smile to express on her face.
“The second day after I arrived, we moved to Mong Kok, which is right next to Yau Ma Tei.”
“Mong Kok?’
“Yes. It means prosperous or busy corner in Cantonese.”
“I see. By the way, are you still jet lagged?”
“Um…just a little bit. How about you?”
“I was exhausted until I saw you.”
She gave him a glance.
“Where do you stay, Rheanna?”
“I stay with one of the girls from the short-term mission organization. She and her family live in Mong Kok. What about you?”
“In a hotel nearby. Hey, how is your ministry?”
“So far, so good. I have counseled two girls about my age.”
“Have they made the decision to follow Christ?”
“By God’s grace, they have,” she answered in an exciting voice.
“Very good.”
“Well, thank you for helping me straighten things out the other day. I should have put my past behind and moved on with my new life in Christ, especially when I am helping those who are hurt in their relationship.”
“Very well said. We are a new creation in the Lord.”
“Yup.”
Patting his stomach, he asked, ‘I am getting hungry now. Did you have dinner yet?”
“No. There is a restaurant famous for its noodle soup. It’s just around the corner from here. I tried it yesterday, and it’s pretty good.”
“Sounds good to me.”
When the restaurant was in view, Rheanna pointed toward it. ‘There it is.”
As they were crossing the street, a car suddenly rushed in their direction. Dewey, without a bit of hesitation, gripped her arm, and she screeched.
After pulling the girl to safety, he asked with concern, “Are you all right?”
“Yes, thank you. I didn’t see it coming.”
“There’s no traffic light in this section of the street. We need to be more careful.”
She nodded.
“Are you now ready?”
“Yup.”
Dewey then held her hand and walked with her to the restaurant. At that moment, Rheanna felt connected with him once again and became immersed in his love. Walking hand in hand with the gorgeous girl, Dewey was filled with joy and realized that his dream had become a reality. When they reached the restaurant, neither he nor she wanted to let go of their hands as if they were to hold tight the deeper relationship they had once lost.
In autumn 2007, both graduated from the seminary. Dewey became an associate pastor at a local church in Deerfield, and Rheanna joined an evangelistic association in Chicago and reached out to those hurt in their relationship.
Three years later, as they exchanged their wedding vows, the groom said in a soft voice, “Rheanna, my heart for you hasn’t changed since the day I met you in the library. It will remain real forever and ever more.’ In turn, the bride also said in a soft voice, “Dewey, my love for you has settled since the evening we met in Hong Kong. It will remain firm for the rest of my life.”
