Faith
Abraham is the Father of faith. He is the Father of three Faiths, Christianity, Jewish and Islam. It is the promised seed of Abraham that made him ‘the father of nations’.
The very first step in the Sacred History, The Holy Bible, is the Promise of Seed by God. It is the great call of Abraham. God’s first words were, “Leave your country, your family and your father’s house, for the land I will show you. I will make you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great, and you will be a blessing”. (Genesis 12:1-2) These words comforted and strengthened Abraham to start off his journey of faith at the age of 75.
The promise changed his name
After the promise even the name of Abraham was changed. He was known previously as Abram and his name was changed later into Abraham which means ‘Father of many nations’. He left his place called Ur in Chaldea and later settled in the land of Canaan, Egypt and Philistines. He was a shepherd, herdsman and the patriarch of ancient Israel.
The belief of Abraham
Abraham was childless and was not in a position to believe the words of God when He said that Sarah will bear a son even in her old age. But just trusting the promise of God, Abraham began what was to be a 1500-mile journey along the Euphrates and Mediterranean with his family and possessions. He was driven to Egypt by famine. But he returned to Canaan richer ‘in flocks, silver and gold in Egypt’.
Dejected Abraham reassured by Yahweh
At Bethel, Abraham was much dejected when his brother Lot was separated from him. But Yahweh reassures his promise with blessings, “All the land I will give to you and your descendents for ever. I will make your descendents as the dust of the earth” (Genesis 13: 15-16). Even after leaving his nomadic life and having settled in Hebron with his wife Sarah, there was no sign any progeny. Ten years had passed. But still the promise of Yahweh is unfulfilled. Abraham’s anxiety for a son to be the bearer of the divine promises, led Sarah to give her Egyptian maid, Hagar to bear Ishmael, when he was 86 years.
Perseverance in the faith
The ‘seed’ of promise was sown at the birth of Isaac, when Abraham turned 100 years old. His faith was accepted by the divine command to sacrifice his only heir on the mount Moriah. When Isaac enquired about the lamb for offering, Abraham confirmed God’s blessing by saying, “God will provide”. His unwavering loyalty and unhesitating obedience earned him the friendship with God.
The fulfillment of the promise
As promised by Yahweh, Abraham became the ‘father of nations’. He became the salvation history. He turned out to be a blessing when he believed that God can do what He had promised.
