Names are often very difficult to remember. It helps if we can associate a name with something else. I learned a name game many years ago at a woman’s bridal or baby shower. It required both imagination and a good memory.
Each participant described themselves by an adjective beginning with the same letter as their first name. The winner recalled all of the catchy names and received a prize for their effort. It can be even a bigger challenge if several adjectives are used. I will get the ball rolling. I might be poor, poor pitiful Pam.
I received the sad news of the death of a friend this morning. He worked with my husband many years ago; both were spinning records as Top 40 DJ’S at WNDR, Syracuse, N.Y. in the days when AM Radio ruled the airways.
The announcers had nicknames describing them in easy fashion. Our friend’s outgoing personality and broad smile led to his air name of Happy Jack. His driver’s license may have read John McNamee, but to a faithful audience he became Happy Jack.
The prayer of Jabez is recognized world-wide following the publication of a book. It gives encouragement and speaks of a man’s turning to God through prayer. Many do not realize the large part his name played in his requests.
“Jabez was a very good man, who was better than his brothers. His mother said, ‘I have named him Jabez because I was in much pain when I had him. Jabez prayed to the God of Israel and said, ‘I pray that you would bless me and give me more land! Be near me and don’t let anyone hurt me! Then I will not have any pain.’ God gave Jabez what he asked for (1 Chronicles 4:9-10 ERV).”
Can you imagine going through life thinking, I’m a pain? Maybe family members repeatedly reminded him of the pain he caused for his mother. He turned to God for blessings and God did not turn him away. A name defined as pain became a part of the holy Bible; within the pages, we discover Jesus, who in pain bore our sin upon the cross of Calvary.
