Your Weight or Mine?
(From Isaiah 46)
Are you carrying a burden?
Does it weigh you to the ground?
Are your shoulders bent in suffering
With a heaviness profound?
Do you stumble? Are you weary?
Do you stagger with the grief
Of a growing weight oppressive
Where you find just no relief?
Stand still, my friend, and listen
Fix these words deep in your mind,
They are words of life and freedom,
They are words of God who’s kind:
‘Listen to me, O my people,
You who dwell upon the earth,
I have held you since you were conceived
And carried you since birth.
I am He who will sustain you,
I have made you by my hand,
I will rescue, I will carry,
I’ll enable you to stand.
To whom can you compare me?
To the gods who’d you create?
Who will never hear your cries for help
Or lift one heavy weight.
I am God, there is no other,
Any my Righteousness is near,
My salvation will not be delayed,
Open your ears and hear.
I have made you, I will carry,
I will all your burdens bear,
Even right up to your final days
Of old age and grey hair.
Would you then still hold your burden,
Let it weigh you to the ground,
Will hour heart still break in suffering
With the heaviness profound?’
