Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips (Psa. 141:2-3).
Oops! I wish I hadn't said that. It happens to all of us.
Wrong words begin in the heart. Christian companies mail me pieces in the mail. They do so with a worthy goal: stop crime, homosexuality, and abortion...However, explicit materials in them cause impure thoughts to enter my mind if I read them.
After I read them, I think upon them until they lodge within my heart. This has taught me not to read such materials. I just believe these companies know about what they speak. I act upon my knowledge.
These evil thoughts started in my heart. When I harbor them, it comes out. Nonetheless, I cannot guard my own heart. If I turn it over to the Lord, He will do so.
Failure to separate myself from evil influences hinders my fellowship with God. We can only serve one master: God or this world. As I trust God, He will keep my heart. He helps me to focus on pure and true thoughts. With His aid, I think on honest and just thoughts. I concentrate on lovely things.
I do my part as I yield to the Lord and trust Him. I turn away from materials that cause evil thoughts to enter my mind and heart.
As I do so, the Lord keeps the door of my mouth. He teaches me the hatred of evil; He protects me from dwelling on evil things.
Oh God, set a watch before my lips. Keep my heart from evil things. In Jesus' name. Amen.
My book, Our Lifeship: A Study in Proverbs for Women, speaks on the topic of the tongue. See my bio, more about my book, and speaking at www.writingfrommyheart.com.
