Window to my heart
The masquerade of our heart paints a face of genuineness. Human nature hides what one feels and portrays what one wants others to believe. A display of human emotion on stage portrays a very different heart attitude behind the scene. One may congratulate another with a hearty ‘well done’ hug in open view yet a drastic sneer of contempt may follow once out of view. We hug with hands and judge with our hearts. The illusion of the present day has got people so messed up with deception; one never knows what the other means. Is their smile genuine? Are you really pleased for me? Do you genuinely sympathise with me? What we say, we do not mean and what we mean, we do not say.
Amidst all of the role-playing, we become unsatisfied with the condition of our heart, mind and spirit. We give new meaning to the scripture, ‘the abundance of our heart pours out of our mouth.’ With enough practice we can even control our mouth from reciting a practiced script with a hint of irony. What a lovely red outfit you have, one would exclaim on one hand and with a swift turn of the cheek, it turns to, red is definitely not her colour. We become so lost in the roles we play, the masks we wear, the costumes we gird and the script we write that we lose ourselves completely in the act. The heart is the most deceitful above all. We must not follow the promptings of our own heart but rather lead our heart to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
Each of us is called to have a pure heart. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. A pure heart is a transparent heart. No frills, no fake, no roles, no masks and no masquerade. What you see is what you get any part of the day in any circumstance even if the driver on the next lane cuts across without indicating. A deceitful heart births fruits of the world. A heart imitating Christ bears fruits of the Spirit.
The gift of transparency and authenticity will make you the real deal. If God were handing out windows to our hearts would we stand in line for a fitting? It would mean a clear view of the condition of our heart. The display window of our heart will be a daily screening of our motives, intentions and thoughts.
It’s all well to be genuine with our mouths but the secrecy of a hidden heart leads to misleading people. Deception is the incense that repels the presence of God. The state of our hearts either invokes God’s presence or not. Our actions may be commendable but will the motive behind it survive the fire of genuineness. We have one lifetime and our journey on earth is a stop on the way to eternal life. Who we are is a reflection of the road we are travelling. The nature of our natural heart conforms to the circumstances of life but a pure heart draws us to be transformed to the nature of Christ.
We are called according to the word of God to be imitators of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the perfect example of all that is genuine and pure. He mirrored all that was pleasing to his Father. The worse repellant for the devil is a heart that is true to God. Sometimes one becomes so accustomed to a life of masks, one loses all trace of genuineness. An imitator of Christ is mask less. The glory of righteous living is a sweet aroma to the Lord and a powerful display of agape love. Anything fake is a poor reflection of the original work of art. We are all works of God’s art shining to be a light of all that is holy, genuine, just and true.
Understanding why we wear masks in life is a rendering experience that takes us to a journey deep into the chambers of our hearts. It leads us to open cabinets of our mind that have been locked away for too long. We consider it easier to bury our unresolved so deep so that we may never have to deal with it ever. This pretence does not last long. The fearless and brave may be the most afraid. The confident may be the most insecure. The tough may be the most wounded. These are the issues that keep us masked. God wants to change all of this and help us be fearless, brave, confident and secure. It’s vital to reach into our own hearts and compare it to the heart of God.
No matter how much we try to hide behind our pretences, God wants to fashion us into real people. He wants to teach us how to deal with our unresolved and move on from that point on the highway of recovery. The surface draws from a well deep within. It is this well deep within that needs cleansing. Many times we say and do things to please those around us knowing full well, it is displeasing to our Father in heaven. Adapting to fit in leaves the crowd happy and the individual subjugated.
One day we will look in the mirror and wonder who is this person looking back. Time waits for no one. It may be too late. Life is not a dress rehearsal. We cannot undo everything. Transparent people are those who can be trusted as friends, confidantes and guides in life’s issues.
Purifying our heart is a process starting with matching our heart to the heart of Jesus. A quick introspection will underline the areas that need change and areas that need healing. God is ever present to take away our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh. He wants us to have a heart that compliments his own heart. It is a matter of us choosing between remaining the same or for reaching out for a new heart.
The water in our well needs a Holy spirit purifying and a word stirring. The purging soap of the Father will wash away our blackest spots. The balm of Gilead will seal every chamber of our hearts. To get out of difficulty one has to go through it. There is nothing in you that God cannot change or forgive. Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Before time eludes you altogether, allow God to make you the real deal. Choose to be as transparent as the air we breathe. Let the window to our heart be draped with genuineness, purity, integrity and honesty. No more masks. No more facades. No more smokescreens.
May everyday, every hour and every moment of your life on earth please the heart of the father in heaven. The reality of Christ makes you a real person. It gives you an undivided heart.
Prayer Thought
Create me in a clean heart O Lord; renew the right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence O Lord. Take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of my salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me. In Jesus name I ask it. Amen
