Short Dramas and Plays
'FAITHEIST'
The following dialogue should be staged simply, by two people of the same age, and preferably the same sex. It begins quite calm – like 'I'm a PC...and I'm a Mac...'
ONE I'm an atheist...
TWO And I'm a Christian...
ONE I believe in evolution.
TWO I believe in Creation.
ONE I believe in chance.
TWO I believe in a creator God.
ONE You say I'm too logical.
TWO You say I'm deluded.
ONE Religion is the source of all evil.
TWO Actually, a love of Money is the root of all evil.
Pause. Number one thinks.
ONE You religious people are a threat to humanity. Religion brings wars.
TWO Pride and Mankind bring wars...and I'm not religious.
ONE Religion – what?
TWO I'm not religious.
ONE What do you mean your not religious?
TWO I'm a Christian.
ONE Right.
TWO I'm not religious.
ONE But you just said you're a -
TWO Christian. Yes. I enjoy a relationship
with Jesus. Who – by the way - fought against institutionalized, pretentious religion.
ONE God is just a comfort blanket.
TWO How?
ONE People just believe in God to ensure some kind of fast pass into Heaven.
TWO Actually, the Bible says it depends on faith and trust in Christ. NOT simply a belief
in God.
ONE Well whatever, it's still a comfort blanket.
TWO Atheism is a comfort blanket.
ONE Yeah right! How'd you work that one out?
TWO Atheism removes all accountability to a higher power. You will never truly have to face up to your actions, or their consequences. You can do what you want, when you want, and how you want. Comfortably. Believing in God makes us accountable, and means we will have to answer to Him one day, and give an account to how we've lived. Now that doesn't sound too comfortable to me!
ONE How can you believe in God when you see all this pain and suffering in the world.
TWO How much of the pain can you attribute to man?
ONE What? How is it man's fault there's suffering in the world?
TWO Well for example there are people starving because we horde all the resources. There's plenty of food, but we're too greedy.
ONE Well if God loves those people then He should intervene Himself.
TWO Or maybe He loves us all enough to give us a choice and we will be held accountable to how we've treated the people we share the planet with?
ONE So what about Tsunami's? Earthquakes? Natural disasters?
TWO All are results of a fallen world. A fallen people and a damaged creation.
ONE Oh, for pity's sake.
TWO How can you not believe in a God when you look at the Universe.
ONE Easy...(he looks around him)...see. Easy peasy.
TWO I'm serious. Do you have any idea how perfectly our solar system has been placed? Our lines of orbit, distance to the sun, the positioning of the planets – as far as God's concerned, we're kidding ourselves when we fail to see Him when His fingerprints are all over the place! Creation itself shouts 'GOD'!
ONE God is just a man made idea. All this mercy, forgiveness and love is all comforting, calming, idealistic philosophy.
TWO Actually, If my God is true, and what the Bible says is true: Then yes He may be merciful, forgiving, kind and full of Love. BUT He is also jealous, and Righteous - in it's purest sense. He is a God of justice, and He gets angry.
ONE Ah see! God contradicts Himself if He forbids jealousy, but is jealous Himself.
TWO God is jealous for what is HIS.
ONE So he's a hypocrite!
TWO No. He's not jealous of what belongs to others. There's a difference between human envy, and God's jealousy.
ONE You cannot prove to me that God exists.
TWO You can't prove to me that He doesn't.
ONE That's not an argument.
TWO Nor is that.
ONE You can't back up your claims.
TWO Very well. The Bible.
ONE The Bible?
TWO Yes. You wanted proof.
ONE The Bible is nothing but fanciful
mythology.
TWO Have you read it?
ONE I wouldn't waste my time.
TWO Didn't think so. The Bible is actually
not very inventive if you believe it is all
myth. It contains biographical information. Life stories. You might say it's inaccurate, but
archaeological discovery, geographical accuracy and prophetic fulfilment would beg to differ.
ONE Prophetic fulfilment?
TWO Oh yes, didn't I mention? Jesus alone,
fulfilled over 300 prophecies about Himself, hundreds of years before He even existed...the fact that He would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver. That He would die for our sins. That He would be despised. His crucifixion itself was prophesied, before crucifixion even existed as a method of execution! And those were just the messianic prophecies. Though I suppose you could say -
ONE He was...lucky?
TWO There's plenty more. Not just about
Jesus, but of places and situations too. You want proof but you won't even look at it yourself.
ONE Your faith is fanciful.
TWO Your faith is plentiful.
ONE Your faith is – what?
TWO Your faith is plentiful. Strong. It
takes great faith to be an atheist.
ONE I have no faith.
TWO I beg to differ. Your faith is quite
admirable.
ONE What's your point? I told you I have no faith.
TWO For you to have such a strong faith in luck, and chance, in spite of what you can see for yourself....it's admirable.
ONE Well I -
TWO Me on the other hand, I have to believe
in a Creator...it takes a lot of faith to be an atheist...(he smiles)...your a 'Faitheist'.
