‘IT IS FINISHED’!
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John 19:28-30;
‘It is finished’ declared the Lord Jesus Christ! Heaven was right on attention to blow the final whistle as the Son of God breathed His last breath on the cross of Calvary. It has indeed finished! The death of the Lamb of God had brought so many things to a permanent end. It was necessary that God put a total end to some things in order to usher in a new dawn for humanity. A new beginning is impossible without an utter end of the old.
The first thing that was brought to the end by Jesus’ death on the cross was the dispensation of law. Jesus’ died on the cross to end the dispensation of the law and ushered in dispensation of grace by His resurrection. In God’s program for humanity, the dispensation of law, which began from Moses until the revelation of the Son of God, had fulfilled its purpose and was now being discarded. With the end of the Law dispensation, man can no longer seek justification by keeping the law but by trusting only in the finished work of the cross. Salvation comes only through atoning blood of Jesus and not by works or effort of man.
Another thing that Jesus’ death brought to an end was Satan’s hold on humanity. Right from Adam, the whole humanity had been sold under slavery to the devil because of sin. Man’s disobedience to God provided Satan the legal ground to enslave the entire humanity, but here was the Lamb of God offering His stainless blood to pay the penalty for man’s sins, the very reason Satan had kept him under bondage. Man had been hitherto imprisoned, but Jesus accepted to pay the death penalty required to discharge and acquit him. As the Lord breathed His last breath and gave up the ghost on the cross of Calvary, the charges against man were dropped! However, the freedom purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ is available only to those who have accepted the saving grace and made Him Lord of their lives.
Just as the death of Jesus Christ marked permanent end of slavery to sin and Satan, His resurrection equally opened a new dawn for those who accept Him as their Lord and Saviour. By resurrection, Jesus Christ became the first born from the dead. It is not on record in human history that anyone resurrected from death and died no more, but only Jesus the Son of God! Everyone who is redeemed by His blood is equally a partaker of this glorious resurrection - resurrection unto life. Those who lived and died in sin without accepting the resurrected Christ have no hope of partaking in the resurrection of life, their resurrection will be unto fierce judgment and eternal death in hell at the end. ‘Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of
Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years’ Rev. 20:6;
Despite all that the death and resurrection of Jesus have brought to humanity, it is unfortunate that a lot of people are still living under the bondage of Satan, Sin, Sickness, and Curses when the Lord Jesus had openly declared that all of these are finished. A lot of believers are not enjoying the immense benefits of the cross all because they have failed to appropriate the limitless power of resurrection. The devil will always try as much as he can to keep you under perpetual bondage by making you to be ignorant of all that Christ’s death and resurrection have accomplished for you, but it is your responsibility to discover and appropriate those things that God had freely given to you following the shedding of precious blood of Jesus on Calvary. The reason the Lord commanded the Church to observe Holy Communion is to keep in constant remembrance all that He has done for us through His death and resurrection.
Dearly beloved, the good news this season is that ‘it is finished’! For you, sorrow is finished, failure is ended, curses are over, bondage is over, burden of sin is terminated, what the Lord Jesus has finished cannot finish you! The declaration of heaven concerning you is that a new dawn is set for you. After resurrection, Jesus assumed a celestial body and operated absolutely in the glorious realm to demonstrate that those who are in Christ can now live in the newness of life which is void of bondage to sin, curses, sorrow and Satan. Rise up today and begin to live in the newness of life that Christ brought by His resurrection for you are seated with Christ in heavenly places far above all principalities and powers! Amen.
