Crying Stones
By Lynn Wallace
And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out (Luke 19:40, KJV).
Did you ever hear a stone cry? God speaks of crying stones.
His servant, Jacob, slept on a stone for a pillow. When he awoke, he took the stone and set it up for a pillar.
Jacob traveled up to Haran and worked for Uncle Laban twenty years. The pillar at Bethel cried out to Jacob, "Return to Bethel. Return to Bethel."
Later, Jacob returned to Bethel and to his God. He set up another pillar. There Jacob put away strange gods and renewed his vows.
To those who have never been to Bethel, God says, "Go to Bethel, God's house, and accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour from sin."
Americans may laugh at the heathen who bow before gods of wood and stone, but America has many strange gods. Put away all idols of the heart and renew your vows to God.
When the children of Israel crossed Jordan, they set up stones for memorials at Gilgal. These stones cried out to them of God's power when He swept away the waters of Jordan at flood stage.
They conquered the land and drove out its inhabitants. By now Joseph was an old man. The people promised, "We will serve God." After sealing their promise with a covenant, Joshua took a great stone and set it up for a pillar. This was a stone of witness. In the day the people broke their word, Joshua said the stone will witness against them. This stone reminds us of our vows.
At Mizpeh God gave the victory over the Philistines. Samuel set up a stone and called it Ebenezer, or the stone of help. It bore witness that God had helped them.
On the way to the temple the crowd cried out, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" The Pharisees complained. Jesus said, "If these hold their peace, the stones will cry out."
God called Jesus the Stone of Israel. To us who believe He is the Chief Corner Stone. But to those who reject Him, He becomes a Stone of stumbling. Jesus cries out, "Come unto Me."
God blesses those who heed these crying stones. The God who delivered Israel from the Philistines can still do great things today. He is the stone of help, our Ebenezer, today.
Prayer: O Lord, may I consider these crying stones. Thou art my Cornerstone and precious to me. Thank you for Thy mercy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
