A temper out of control upsets our lifeship. The Captain says, “He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly” (Prov. 14:29). Do not lose it! Be prudent. If your husband utters a bad word, do not shout, “Don’t say that to me.” Instead, say softly, “Honey, do you know what you just said? That kind of words dishonors our God.”
Understanding keeps the godly sailor from troubles. It helps her get along with others. She loves her family, and does not talk about her children’s foibles. She and her husband deal with them privately.
She plans ahead of time, and does not believe everything she hears. If someone starts to gossip or tell a dirty joke, she suppresses it. About gossip, she may say, “Let’s go ask the person about whom you’re talking.” This will stop it quickly. She refuses to listen to dirty jokes and quietly walks away. Soon the crowd will say, “Here comes that ‘preacher’. We can’t talk about that around her.” If they tease us, ignore it. We take away their fun when it does not annoy us.
A discreet and prudent sailor discerns between right and wrong. She seeks to do right. Carefully, she weighs both sides of the issue before she makes a decision.
If someone offends her, she prays about it first. Then she goes privately to that sailor to try to make things right. Only when her Christian sister is obstinate will she take two or three with her. Extreme cases go before the church. We can resolve most conflicts if we go with the right attitude when offended.
Discretion defers anger. A godly sailor forgives quickly. If she offends someone, she does not glibly say, “I’m sorry,” but she genuinely apologizes, and does whatever she can to make it right. She humbly admits it when she is wrong.
