“Then the word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,
"Speak to Zerubbabel governor of Judah, saying, 'I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
'I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the horses and their riders will go down, everyone by the sword of another.'
'On that day,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,' declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,'" declares the LORD of hosts.” Haggai 2:20-23 (NASB)
THE above passage reveals an awe-inspiring truth that, aside from general callings (e.g. ministry of reconciliation or evangelism), God has a specific calling for each of us. Whether we know it, or not, is secondary. In this instance, Zerubbabel the governor of Judah came to know of his call from the LORD through prophet Haggai.
As Haggai obeyed the LORD in giving the word of prophecy to Zerubbabel, the cause of God’s kingdom could be advanced. Without God we can’t do it and, without us, God wouldn’t do it.
This passage also shows us that God is very clear about what He wants to do -- that He is prepared to shake the heavens and the earth so as to fulfil His plan and purpose in the fullness of time through the man or woman whom He freely chooses.
When God calls, the challenge is for us to respond with a willing heart regardless of our feelings, circumstances and what other people might say. Our part in God’s design is to embrace what He tells us to do. And, do it with the power or enabling of the Holy Spirit who is our Helper and Senior Partner.
Isaiah 40:31 urges us to wait upon the LORD. As we do so, let’s ask for wisdom and the anointing of the Holy Spirit at the start of each day. The busier we are, the more we need to pray in advance and be full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom (as with the seven stewards of Acts 6) so that we can overcome the obstacles we face as we work out God’s specific calling.
Now that we are ready, we need to follow-through with faith-actions as we tackle these two questions:
* WHAT HAVE GOD CALLED ME TO DO?
* WHEN AM I GETTING STARTED?
As the Holy Spirit and God’s wisdom is upon us, He will order our steps on the ‘How’ to do it and ‘Who else’ to involve.
NOW is the time for us to start believing and rise up to our call, and let His light shine through us for His glory!
