The Times Are A-Changin’

I got one of those E-mails today about growing old and all the changes that take place in a lifetime. A youngster asks his grandfather about his age. The man replies that he was born before television, frozen foods, Frisbees, the pill, pantyhose, and the computer. He goes on expanding the list to include cell phones, television, FM radio, DVDs, and tape decks. He says a pot was used to cook in, coke was a type of coal, and aids was a helper in school and rock and roll didn’t exist…and this is only a partial list. The kicker was that the grandfather was fifty-nine years old! He was born in 1950, not 1850 which the grandson might have guessed.
“There is nothing sure in life except death and taxes” is an old saying but I would include another item in that list:“ Change.” Change begets change, one invention leads to another, often in a short period of time. I wonder how far back in time you would have to travel to find a period where father, son, and grandson used the same tools, sang the same songs, and used the same transportation methods. Or how about the ladies? When did a mother, daughter, and granddaughter use the same methods to prepare foods and care for babies the same way? How about the drudgery of housework back then? The 1900s and the 1800s were times of great change. You would have to go back to the early 1800s or even the 1700s to find a period in history where change didn’t affect each generation. Amazing!
The Bible doesn’t mention much about change happening in the last days but there is one verse. Remember? Daniel 12:4 “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” Wow, what an understatement! Those last eleven words are almost an afterthought! There is not even a hint as to the extent of the stupendous changes that will happen. What if a wise old Sadducee had asked Jesus about the changes mentioned in this verse from Daniel? I can see Jesus tracing a circle in the sand. He divides the circle into sections and explains the true size of the earth and all the regions not yet discovered. Can you picture the shock and bluster on the face of the old Sadducee when he is told about man going to the moon? No, Jesus only told us what we could take in and no one in those times could fathom what the years would bring. It is estimated there are over five hundred verses in the Bible relating to heaven. We do have some idea about the wonders of that new world. We are told about the beauty and glory and the magnificent sights we will behold. But, I wonder, is this also an understatement? Is heaven grander, more beautiful than we, with our limited minds, can imagine. If we could take a field trip to that marvelous place, would we want to settle for what the earth has? I doubt it. What about hell? Its name is found in the Bible over two hundred times. We know about the pain of that hideous place. We know about the loneliness and despair. But are those verses also an understatement of the agonies of the ugly abode? It causes one to wonder and to be fearful for those who have not accepted His Grace and willingly, unashamedly, taken Him as their Lord. It drives one to kneel and pray for those who are sinking into the dank pit of hopelessness
But there is one thing that is constant, has not changed and that is humankind’s nature. Whether you live in 1610 or 1720 or 1920, you can be sure people will be the same, always and forever. We don’t know about the innovations in technology in the future but man will always find an evil use to put these new inventions. We can be sure of that.
But through His loving Grace our nature can be changed. There is hope and there is a bright future, an eternity where love and goodness will prevail and we can share it all because of His work! Those will be the good times when we will all welcome change!
