And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,
Coming down from God out of heaven, prepared
as a bride adorned for her husband. Rev 21:2
This one verse conjures up many thought images and questions. To discover some answers we must compare Scripture with Scripture and my favorite is Isa 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in The LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh Himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
A few things to notice from Revelation are that the Bride is Coming from heaven, she is not the betrothed now, not the engaged one, but the recently married yet still a new bride fresh from the altar of covenant.
The Bride is A City. The Word city is polis {pol'-is} meaning ABODE or Dwelling Place for citizens or residents, it relates to the dwelling place of a great throng and a FULLNESS of residing therein.
Looking through Scripture we find that Jesus called US a City! Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
He is assuring His believers of their Eternal HOME knowing full well of the history of His people and their longing and hope as revealed in Hebrews 13:14 For here have WE no continuing city, but we seek one to come. And 11:16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for HE hath prepared for them a city.
There is much depth in the study of Zion, The New Jerusalem, The City of Saints, Our Eternal Abode, but the KEY to understanding Revelation 21:2 is the essence of Jesus' Prayer in John 17 for UNITY which is another word for MARRIAGE if we think about it correctly.
In the covenant unity of being a bride, one is securely set in a position of provision and protection by her groom and his family. Studying ancient mores and customs will enlighten us further in these details.
Rev 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him The Name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from My God: and I will write upon him My New Name.
That verse creates an excellent word picture, when a woman is married she receives a NEW NAME as well as a very special abode. Think of the last wedding you went to, remember the intense attention, hope and thrill focused on their future together, their plans and goals to create a safe secure and new homelife fortified by the love of those two individuals. Instinctively human beings do look to the man as provider, protector and sustainer.
Our God proves Himself faithful and true in all of our deepest hopes and needs especially in that of protection. Rev 20:9 And they (enemies) went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. Reference also Isaiah 52:1 Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.
I end part one with the excellence of the Unity prayed for by Jesus as revealed for our future, Revelation 22:17
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come.
And let him that heareth say, Come.
And let him that is athirst come.
And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
The Voice of the Bride is Echoing the Voice of the Spirit of Christ calling out to all those who still do not know of the Good News. In harmony the call is the eternal invitation.
