It's really pretty easy. Before the part you want to italicize, place a <i> (or b for bold or u for underline) and at the end, you do this: </i>
Just make sure you hit preview to make sure you did it right. If so, it should show up just like the reader will see it. If the symbols are there instead, make sure you don't have any spaces in the code.
