How awesome and strange the
path ahead,
Through desert lands, barren,
death dealing,
Darkness afflicted, stealing of
last light,
Must he go there?--he must.

Father's plan, Spirit's way, the
Son of man
Test and try, severely hinder,
draw aside;
The flesh is weak for all mankind,
the valley of shadows
Waits for thee.

Forty days...endless nights...little
to drink,
No morsel to eat, hunger and thirst
challenge resolve,
Oh, how he wished it away;
desire confounds
His being.

In the lowest swales of his
stunning ordeal,
Young rabbi drained to
his weakest; no strength,
Little will, all flesh betraying--
the Temptor soars over
The mountains.

Spotting his prey, the angel
Through dazzling swirls,
a dusting
Of peace: All hail, he said
to the suffering Master,
I thought it might be you.

Alone before the great angel,
Of ages past, Jesus summons
his will; his faith
To stand the test. All hail,
he answered the angel,
So pleasing to behold.

Now then. Why do you suffer, if
ye be he, turn these stones
Into bread...if you really are
the one. If he truly
Is the Son. For drink, I have
this excellent wine,
He proffered in golden cups.

These things, he has not had,
lo, these many weeks,
For bread he longs--oh Father,
the wine within his reach...
Drink it! said the bright angel.
No. The Son stands firm.
Life is more than this.

Fine, fine, suffer if you must, but
I still have my doubts. Your
People will, too, don't you think?
He lifts him high on castle wall,
Far above the valley's floor, and
leads him to the ledge: Fling
Yourself down, Son of God!

Surely the angels will spare him;
the scriptures tell it so.
Cast himself down, make a display,
thrill the crowds of Jesrusalem--
Then we'll know for sure...carpenter.
And tempt my God with foolish
Tests? No, it shall never be.

The teacher of Nazareth is special,
and plain enough to see;
A man like him has potential:
Come and love the view.
Transported to the highest peak,
Earth spread silent at his feet,
Glorious in splendor...waiting.

Jeweled cities radiant, palaces of
shining gold, armies of mighty
Warriors, harvests full and bountiful,
riches overflowing--all for you, Nazarene.
His but for the asking,
all you see before you...
Only bow, and worship me.

How pleasant it seems, this vista,
so pleasing to the eyes,
A world of fat and plenty, waiting
for their king; waiting
For a king. He came to be
a king...the chosen
One of Israel.

Bow, said the resplendent one,
this throne your destiny,
It's mine to give, why suffer in
vain? Take it boy, and
Live! The cross is foolishness...
not fit for royalty. Bow
The knee to me.

With the last breath of his will,
he turns from
The delightsome land, and
faces his angry tormentor:
I worship, and serve, the Lord
my God--him, and him alone.
A destiny.
