Re: A week off, and a question

-- do you have a new topic to suggest? Jan, I would like to see a lesson on dealing with the verb "to be"—is, was, were, and all the rest. I know it is a good idea to avoid using too many "ing" verbs—I was going, He was singing, etc. But I still have difficulty cutting back on t...

Re: Share Your Success - Cheering Section

Deb, you shouldn’t dangle temptation in front of me. I’ve already bragged on another forum. However, I maintain that "there is no such thing as too much Brag" so here goes: Mused Literary Review published all four of my submissions: "Death of a Small Town" (rhymed metered p...

Re: Be a Better Writer--COMMAS ARE TRICKY

Judy and Jan, I am having the same problem.

You can access the lesson directly from the main list which has the lessons in chronological order. The Commas With Conjunctions lesson was posted on March 22, 2014. :)

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING RESEARCH IN FICTION

And yes, they are Indians in the story. Anyone ever hear of the French and Native American Wars or of the First Nation uprisings in the West? It's part of balancing historical accuracy with political correctness. Unfortunately in today's society, the former is often thrown out in the name of the la...

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING RESEARCH IN FICTION

1. Stay true to the time period, to be historically accurate. 2. Appeal to modern readers when it comes to issues that are viewed differently now. I welcome suggestions from any of you reading this: how does a writer handle this quandary? Sibermom, you are very brave to write historical fiction for...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Writing on topic

Jan, your lesson collection has grown to the point that one forum isn't enough. The same thing happened with the Challenge forum—now it is nine forums.

Possible Categories for Jan's Lessons

The Eight Challenge Criteria
Poetry
Genres
Crafting
Critiquing
etc.

Re: Be a Better Writer--Writing on topic

I've finished the links [Cinnamon Bear] gave me. She mentioned you have a series of lessons relating to the Writing Challenge. Are they grouped together so I can find them easily? If not, do you recall the topic titles so I can search? Judy, first, here is a link to the eight criteria upon which ou...

Yes, do what Jan suggests—include an explanation in either the preface or in an end note. It will provide clarification, and also readers will be interested to learn that the story is part of your family history.

...As a person who loves to read, I find myself wanting to urge some titles on you--"Oh, surely you'll love this one!"...Out of sheer curiosity--since you don't enjoy reading very much, why did you want to become a writer? I'm very interested in hearing about that. I'll bet you have a fas...

Re: Be a Better Writer--BE A BETTER READER

The best non-classic books have generally positive reviews—but this comes with a caveat. Reviews on sites like Amazon or GoodReads aren’t necessarily true to the quality of the book. Many writers ask their friends and family to leave positive reviews on those sites, and unfortunately, some writers ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--BE A BETTER READER

Jan, I can't possibly disagree with any of your four points. Of course people who want to write should read lots of books, read different kinds of writing, read books by the best writers, and should read like a writer. But here's my dirty little secret—I'm not much of a reader. I looked at the three...
