Re: General writing Accountability group desired to start
If it's not full, I think I should join this group. I know I always accomplish more goals when I have some accountability or deadlines. I have so many ideas and writing dreams that never seem to get addressed. I also realized that for years I have postponed things, convincing myself I needed to lear...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Commas with conjunctions
One of my early teachers taught us to remember that the apostrophe marked where a word was squeezed until a letter squirted out.

Re: Writing is a Risky Business - Tip for Writers
I found the blog through FaceBook and was suitably impressed with your valuable information. Now I need to figure out who was the visitor to the blog from Greene, NY. That's just around the corner from here, and I would love to find another Faith Writer so close!

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING RESEARCH IN FICTION
I'm not sure how much is brave and how much is stupidity. The more I work on it the more I fear it will never meet a publisher's (or parent's) approval because of the portrayal of the Native Americans, realistic or otherwise. And yes, they are Indians in the story. Anyone ever hear of the French and...

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING RESEARCH IN FICTION
I'm concerned that in today's world the events and attitudes of that era will be considered too violent and politically incorrect. Is that a problem when writing historically based fiction?

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING RESEARCH IN FICTION
The story revolves around an incident in my family history. Jonas Williams, crippled since childhood when he had escaped from Indians who took him captive, had settled on a stream feeding into the Susquehanna River and operated a tannery and a grist mill. It was late June 1778 when the Indians, stir...

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING RESEARCH IN FICTION
I have a question closely related to this topic: The research I've been doing for a historical fiction (?) has dead-ended without a piece of important information - just where did it happen. While I can narrow it down to within a hundred miles, the terrain affects the development of action. Do I jus...

WOW! I thought I had a pretty good vocabulary and understood the terms, but you brought in so many more that I can see I need to spend a super amount of time on research!
Good topic.

Re: Be a Better Writer--WRITING RESOURCES, PART 2
I was given a Nook about 18 months ago and I really do like it (I have well over 100 books on mine already) I enjoy it so much so that I bought my husband one, too. We are both avid readers and currently have well over a thousand books. (I'm someone who used to "read" dictionaries and ency...

Re: Be a Better Writer--FIND YOUR OWN VOICE
I think "finding your own voice" is one of the most difficult aspects of writing for me. I honestly don't now where - or how - to begin. I'm not sure I can even recognize "my voice" as opposed to any other voice I might write with.

Passive sentences
I understand passive sentence construction is not as strong as the active construction, but is it necessarily wrong? Sometimes the scene seems to dictate the passive voice. Also, it seems to me that a little variety would actually make for better reading.

Re: Be A Better Writer -- FREE FOR ALL
I also dream of going to Alaska. My friend is in the process of moving there but is stuck in Edmonton where her driver for her 2nd vehicle quit on her. Instead of vicariously sharing the trip with her I'm distraught over the circumstances (I think that's empathy not vicariousness). I've tried to fig...

Re: Be a Better Writer--WORKING WITH AN EDITOR
Your wonderfully helpful post makes me realize that I need an editor. How does one find one - just run your finger down the list and choose blindly or are there suggestions as how to select one? Also I understand that costs very widely, but is there some sort of ballpark range you can give to help a...
