Jan - I have found that sloppy internet communication has caused more miscommunication than good communication. I find it often reflects a laziness of thought. Ohhh, I yearn for the days of taking a pen in hand and writing that slowly created bit of heart-to-heart, mind-to-mind communication that co...

The phone rang. It is simply a part of life in the parsonage. The rings and you answer it, not knowing what awaits you in the words that will come. But this phone call brought news I would never have expected. "Hello, Reverend McWhinnie." "Sir, we are glad to inform you that you have ...

A Question of Punctuation

A Question of Punctuation

It is far simpler to understand the principle. If you say something before you get the point of the sentence, add a comma. If you build a sentence "backwards," add a comma . After Janet fed the horse, she went to school. To get a good start on our road trip, we left at three in the morning...

Oh, Anja, my name is jim and I am a comma-holic, My editors have always accused me of placing a comma everywhere I pause to think. I sense that it may arise out of my soul and mind tending to operate out a poetic, flow of consciousness way. Any suggestions how to cope with this obsessive comma-inser...

Worn out from a long day at work, Jan came home, exhausted. At the door she slipped off her shoes before plodding toward the kitchen. All she wanted was a cold drink and something sweet - maybe the refrigerator held some leftover cake. “Ow!” She lifted her foot to find the cause of this shard of pai...

Sorry, Jan, about the red herring.

I have always been taught to find the perfect verb that allows you to dispense with the adverb. Does this apply also with nouns and adjectives?

Jan, great thread going here. The conversation stirred an idea, tangential though it might be. I always find those moments in writing when I am trying to CHOOSE between this word or that word. I thought it might be both fun and helpful to take sentences we are writing and then have feedback over whi...
