Re: Writer Research

Cathy, I had to smile, because I've stopped reading a book when the author had a cardinal peck at a tree. I think, if you want to add a specific detail (Atlanta or cardinal) you better be familiar with it. If not, then learn about it. I cut a whole scene out of my historical novel because I wanted t...

Re: Writer Research

Thanks for the comments, Holly. It's a good habit to research all kinds of things. Sloths and bedbugs? I haven't had the opportunity to research them. Those books by Ellis Peters sound interesting.

Re: Writer Research

Thank you for your replies. Joanne, I've never read any books by Roseanna White, but I like authors that take the time to make their writing authentic. My favorite Biblical story writer is Ellen Gunderson Traylor. You can tell she has spent a lot of time studying the culture and history of Biblical ...

Writer Research

A huge 'thank you' to Yvonne Blake for writing a second lesson for me during this crazy two months when I was so very busy (we had a kitchen remodeled and went to Florida to help our daughter move, and I was working two part-time jobs). I'm very grateful to her for stepping up, and I think you'll f...

Re: Writing Easy Readers

This is great Vonnie! That's also one of my favorite genres. My youngest was reading Junie B Jones books in kindergarten (She's 23 now!) She loved the series because it was a "chapter book" but one we could read together, often taking turns with her reading one side and I read the other. ...

Re: Writing Easy Readers

Since I really need to direct my creativity in to my challenge entry for the week, I guess I'll stick with option one. I'm not sure if it is actually an easy reader or a picture book, but one of my kids' favorites was Robert Lopshire's Put Me in the Zoo. Yes, Holly, Put me in the Zoo is an excellen...

Re: Writing Easy Readers

I enjoyed this lesson, and I was especially interested in your website. I think I'll pass it on to someone I know who home schools. You offer a valuable service. :) Thank you, Laurie. I have found that Polliwog Pages is especially helpful to homeschoolers. They don't usually have a place to display...

Writing Easy Readers

Many thanks to Yvonne Blake, known to some of us as Vonnie, for stepping in with another guest lesson for me while I continue with my unusually busy two months. Like Joanne Sher’s lesson of a few weeks ago, this one covers an area that I know almost nothing about. I hope you’ll post comments and que...

Re: Very Strange

Thank you, Deb.

Contacting Amazon or Createspace might be a good idea. After all, it could be hurting them too,
at least hurting their reputation of protecting their clientele.

Very Strange

Twice in the last month, I've received notices from my Google Alert of this site - http://yfyiginoy.ru/vamage.pdf . I don't know how they got a copy of my book, accept on Amazon where Createspace at posted it. I know I've sold Kindle versions of it there. But can they legally give away free download...

Re: Writing for Children - Picture Books Part 2

I have an observation - (and question) I've noticed that even young children like a series of similar books. I'm thinking of "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and the variations of it . . . also the "Goodnight Moon" variations. I know that kids like something that they are familiar ...

Re: Writing for Children - Picture Books Part 1

Thanks, Joanne. I'm looking forward to see what you've learned. I've been considering writing a children's picture book. (and I've been reading many of them recently to my grandkids) I can see how they could be harder to write than books for older people. I'm learning which ones the kids like better...

Re: Share Your Success - Cheering Section

Over the last few years, I've been compiling my Challenge entries into books - COUNTRY STORE COLLECTIONS (something for everyone) http://www.yvonnebeverlyblake.com/country-store-books.html I like to write Bible stories from a different perspective, and so I had quite a collection of short stories an...

Re: Setting the Scene Correctly

Great lesson, Jan . . . and good examples. I found, when researching for my historical novel, that you can't assume anything. Look up fashions (for different levels of society), items bought at a store, money used, subjects taught at school, schedule of school days/vacation, hymns sung at church, et...

Re: Be a Better Writer--ONOMATOPOEIA

I didn't learn the word onomatopoeia until I was an adult. I knew that there were words that made a sound, but no one had taught me the name for them. (I teach it to kids now in my classes.) As a grandmother, I know that children's books that contain onomatopoeia are loved by kids. Here's one of my ...
