Re: Be a Better Writer -- SCIENCE FICTION

I'm going to try to write a dystopian novel for NaNoWriMo this November. It's going to have a familiar Bible story with a twist and will take place in the future. Just in time for next year's Fiction Page Turner contest. :D Yes! Now that I've submitted a Page Turner entry for this year, I'm looking...

Re: Be a Better Writer -- SCIENCE FICTION

I recently read a Christian sci-fi trilogy that starts with Firebird by Kathy Tyers, and I loved it. The story was very engaging, and the Christian message was subtle but intriguing. I'm going to try to write a dystopian novel for NaNoWriMo this November. It's going to have a familiar Bible story wi...

Re: Be a Better Writer -- FANTASY

Thanks for this great lesson, Jan! Fantasy was one of my favourite genres before I became a Christian. I haven't read any (aside from some books that I've read aloud to the kids) for 17 years. I'd forgotten how much I loved it! I'm excited to try my hand at writing a story for this week's challenge.

Re: 2014 Page Turner Entry Tally

There were 18 entries last year on October 17th. I wonder how many entries there'll be this year. :D

The feedback that I received last year was incredibly helpful. This is an awesome opportunity, platinum members!

Re: Be a Better Writer--WRITING IN DIFFERENT TENSES

Last year, I wrote the rough draft of a novel. I started the book in 3rd person past tense, but when I got stuck about halfway through the manuscript, I decided to switch to 1st person past tense. I'm ready to go back and rewrite the novel, but I'm not sure which POV to go with. My gut says to go wi...

What great advice! I can immediately see that removing those words makes the sentence more powerful. Thanks, Jan!

Re: Be a Better Writer--USING IMAGERY

What a fun thread! It's great to see the friendly debate between writer and editor! :D Here's a little piece that I wrote for a writing course that I took last year. It's probably overkill, since I had to write from all five senses about a quick walk outside. It was a great exercise, though. ~~~~ Th...

Re: Be a Better Writer--MEMOIR AND 1ST PERSON NARRATIVE

I'm not sure if this would count as a memoir--now that I've written it out and edited it down to 150 words! :D It's focusing on two separate incidents, but they are linked by chocolate. There wasn't any room for dialogue, but I tried to keep in mind the other points. ~~~~~~ Chocolate calls to...

Re: Be a Better Writer--LEARNING FROM CRITIQUE

I find these in-depth critiques very, very helpful especially when you include the judging criteria. I hope that you will continue providing these once in a while. I realize that these take a long time to craft, but you are welcome to use any of my challenge entries if you would like to. I purchased...

Re: Be a Better Writer--THE FINAL JUDGING CRITERION

Thank you for this lesson, Jan! I think this criterion is the one that I am most unsure of when I'm going over my entry. I took it to mean: Would this entry be likely to be published in a publication or anthology of its genre? But considering the readership of the FaithWriters anthologies is very he...

Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE

I hadn't written since school, but then an idea for a novel came to me about 6 years ago, and I spent months totally preoccupied in writing my novel. I let it sit for about 4 years. I was afraid to show it to people and maybe find out that it was garbage--it was just so close to my heart. About 2 ye...

Re: Be a Better Writer--TELL, DON'T SHOW? WHAT?

I've been working at adding more "showing" to my writing, because it really needed it. Thank you for pointing out those times when it's better to "tell" too. It's another area where balance is needed to create beautiful art. I think that an expert is someone who knows when to bre...
