Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS
http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp179/aladino2008/b6d17916.gif Jan, I hope this doesn't qualify as a dumb question. :-) Lillian You do know that there aren't ever any dumb questions, right Lillian? Even if every person in the world understands it but you, that doesn't make it dumb. Only when you...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS
I just posted this on FB and then realized it would be a perfect fit for Jan's assignment. Oh, the horror! I was just writing a quick email when the spell-check corrected a lot to alot! What on earth is happening? Do the people who program these things have any idea about grammar? Oh, I must give up...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS
I'm going back to the myriad word. I have to tell you how funny it is that once someone mentions something, all of a sudden it seems like the thing mentioned is everywhere. I had stated earlier that I really didn't think I used the word myriad very much, or ever and didn't see it used that often eit...

Re: Tenses all over the place ---Help---
So now that the judging is over (if I did the math right on my fingers) how do you feel about the tense change? You did a great job and I see you placed in your level so you must have nailed it! I'm going to check it out now. Oh and Bea, please dip your toes in more often. You're such a de...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS
I was the one with whom you discussed nauseous and nauseated. (Of course there could be others) I will mention it if I notice it on a challenge because that is how I learned. As for the UK spelling that can be difficult Just this week someone made a comment about a UK spelling and I left a comment a...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS
Actually, I've gone over lists of commonly misused words quite often and do believe I recognized all of these and have even corrected quite a few while editing for different people. Penultimate is one of my favorite words. (I first learned about it when I read Lemony Snickett with my kids.) Decimate...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons--TRANSITIONS
Would introducing a new speaker be a transition? I did try to repeat words with the same meaning in atrocious and horrible. Perhaps I'm rushing things and that isn't a transition but more of a rule about when to start a new paragraph? Lily Stomped her foot as she waved her finger in Lisa's face. &qu...

Re: Winners for CLICK
I cannot even begin to tell you the roller coaster of emotions I have been on today. I went from being stressed, overwhelmed and sobbing to my husband to checking the ratings to see that I took first in Masters. I've received EC before but never a first in any level and to get it in Masters among so...

Re: Writing Software
My FIL uses one, but English isn't his first language so I can understand the use for him. He tried to get me excited about it, but I guess I just don't understand the point of it. The spell and grammar check on word processors are wrong more often than not. What is it that you like about this softw...

I think I heard Deb has a family wedding coming up very soon so it may be a bit before she gets to the rankings.

Re: Redundant
I think this is a fine place to let your thoughts out. Sometimes just going over them helps a great deal. I read the Hunger Games too. I think the first book was the best by far. I saw the movie for the first time last night. Did you ever get any beta readers for your book? They can be extremely hel...

Re: Redundant
First you may want to post this in the Open Forum section as that will likely catch more people. The Open Forum is the best spot for any writing related questions. (This thread was used a while back for Ann to give some basic writing tips and examples. It is still super helpful if you want to peruse...

Re: Is Hinting no longer done?
Yeah they did away with hinting when they hired professional editors to judge the stories (or about that time) These judges get the results back fairly fast so it was decided to just jump into brick-throwing which can be given the all-clear from as early as Friday night to Monday afternoon. On the F...
