Congrats everyone!

And congrats to Ruth for getting in there for the first time in a year. I'm glad to see your name up there!

Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE

I think the status quo is changing as far as giving and receiving critiques is concerned. I received an email from a friend regarding the comments made on one of my entries and this is a quote "I don't think it was the usual sugar and spice and all things nice". I've noticed that more peo...

Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE

Allison, I don't remember your infamous critique (sorry), but I had a similar one on my piece that went on to place in the BoB that year, and one on a silly little play about Noah. Both were not "faithy" enough for their critics. In one case, I had an extended email conversation with the ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE

A lot of times, I really don't respond to negative critique, because often, I KNOW that was a weak area in that particular entry. So my response (to myself) is just kind of "Yeah, I was afraid of that." and I try to improve on that the next time. There are definitely times when someone has...

Re: Be a Better Writer--MASTERING METER

I never thought I was any good at poetry, until I started writing poetry more frequently for the challenge and I started getting ECs on my poetry. That's something I NEVER would have expected. I've found I do much better with free verse. I actually find that kind of interesting, because I'm a musica...

Re: Be a Better Writer--LEARNING FROM THE PROS

Well, as often happens, this thread has gone off in an unpredictable direction. That's totally fine--it's exciting to see several of you connect over a common interest. I wonder if anyone else out there might want to bring this thread full circle. Are you reading something that you can share with u...

Re: Be a Better Writer--LEARNING FROM THE PROS

Thanks for sharing that excerpt, Allison. What's your feeling about books in series? I have an opinion, but I'll save it until I hear from you (and maybe a few others). It really depends, I think. Generally speaking, I like them. I think it does take some of the suspense out of the first few books,...

Re: Be a Better Writer--LEARNING FROM THE PROS

I am reading "North! or be Eaten" by Andrew Peterson, who also happens to be my favorite Christian singer/songwriter. He is a man of many talents! It's a young adult book, but I love it. The characters are really compelling and draw you in. You feel like you really know them. He also sprin...

Re: Be a Better Writer--BREAKING THE RULES, part 2

I use exclamation points, maybe more than I should, but I try to use them sparingly. I have an entry where I used three, almost for three sentences in a row, but the character was yelling, so a period just didn't seem to work. http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-level4-previous.php?id=45849 I've ...

Re: Winners for the OMNISHAMBLES Challenge

Woohoo! 2 weeks in a row. :)

Also, the EC list on the challenge page is messed up. It leaves out the coorect 2nd place winner, bumping everyone after that up one place, and only has 9 listed.
