Re: Be a Better Writer--ATMOSPHERE
Okay, I'll give it a try. It's February 1938. A first year student nurse has just completed her six months probationary period and is about to learn whether or not she will be accepted as a full fledged student nurse: [How agonizing to sit through chemistry class. The gray dreary day threatened snow...

Re: Be a Better Writer--ATMOSPHERE
Homework Assignment #1: From the first paragraph I get the feeling that Kimberly does not really want her baby. She seems more concerned about her own comfort and about losing her baby weight than about the welfare of her baby. The baby is not identified by name or gender---suggesting that Kimberly ...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
"The Way To a Man's Heartburn" is just the best story!
I hope Letha comes up with something else to serve for supper. She's the antagonist but I wish her well. In her place I would be jealous too.

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
Oh, I love "The Daisy Chain"! And it certainly deserved to win. I agree with Jan that the antagonist was Agatha's loneliness and depression. An additional antagonist is our society which makes it difficult for older people to meet each other. With Daisy's help Agatha and Phillip overcame t...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
I just wanted to jump in and say that I love all three of Jan's entries posted here. But I wanted to comment in particular on "Hope With Wings". In the seven years since Jan submitted this entry the situation has only gotten worse. Advances in prenatal genetic testing and in reproductive t...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
Thanks Jan, for reading my entries. I agree with you regarding the antagonists for both entries. In the case of "Santa Fe Journey" an additional antagonist was the inability of Emily's parents to show her affection. Her parents had additional issues. Her father was in love with Molly but i...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
Many of my entries are set in totalitarian societies or feature wild animals, fires, drunk drivers and the like. So for those entries the antagonists are obvious. On the other hand some of my entries don't feature enough conflict--just nice stories. So I chose two entries that do feature antagonists...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
Now to respond to Jan's post. Hmm...I'm not as well read as some of you. As everyone knows biologists never read anything. Or if they do actually read something it is probably not worth reading. That said, I think I can at least take a stab at Little House On the Prairie . In my view the anta...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
Dear Jan, Thanks for your Writing Basics series. I read all your lessons even though this is the first time that I have posted a reply. Regarding those who were "taken aback" by your invitation posted on Challenge entries: All they had to do was a bit of clicking and they would have seen t...

......I'll wait for the winners to be announced and then decide, based on my placement, if it's worth continuing. if I'm in the top 25%...... Are we actually going to be informed of our exact placement in the contest? I'm not sure I would want to know if I placed 45 out of 45. By the way, how many ...
