Re: Be a Better Writer--SO MANY WRITING TIPS

I see his point. I will look up a word when I'm reading something, but I don't like having to do it. I can see that in certain scenarios readers would get confused or frustrated with too many unfamiliar words. On the other hand, we're told not to overuse the same word in a piece. I write non-fiction...

Re: Be a Better Writer--SO MANY WRITING TIPS

"If you’ve read or heard a phrase before, think of another way to write it. (Jan)" I remember you sharing this tip in the past, and I've thought of it often. This helps me write better. Don't rush. Write, then let your ideas simmer. Let a new twist come to mind. Take a break from a piece, then go ba...

Re: Be a Better Writer--CHOOSING A POV CHARACTER

I had fun experimenting with this when I used to enter the challenge. One time I wrote a poem from the perspective of a child. He was telling about how lucky he was to have his Sunday school teacher. He told about a couple of Bible stories, but I made sure he didn't get the details quite right so it...

Thanks for your example, Jan. That's helpful. :)

Thanks for your comments, Shann. That's exactly how I want my readers to feel. :)

Re: Be a Better Writer--YOU WRITE IN 2ND PERSON

In my writing, I try to help the reader be honest with herself, so I often ask questions like, "Do you ever feel like giving up on your recovery?" To encourage the reader, I might say something like this: God knows you, understands you, loves you, and has a better life waiting for you. There’s no on...

Re: Be a Better Writer--YOU WRITE IN 2ND PERSON

I'm writing an eating disorder recovery course for my site in second person. To me, it makes it more personal. I guess it's similar to what you said about sermons and devotionals.

Re: Winners for HUMOR Challenge

Congrats to everyone!

I haven't entered the challenge in almost four years, and I don't typically write humor. But this one (What a Difference a Thesaurus Makes) was so much fun to write, and I'm glad to see it placed. Family members laughed so hard when they read it. :)

Re: Be a Better Writer--HUMOR WRITING

While neither are knee slapping funny, here are a couple of humorous poems I wrote. This one is about an embarrassing situation, though it didn't really happen. I thought I should mention that. ;) I guess it would fall under the funny situation category of humor. http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-artic...

Re: Be a Better Writer--FREE VERSE

Thanks, Jan. :) I loved experimenting with free verse, as well as other things, in the challenge.

Re: Be a Better Writer--FREE VERSE

I later renamed this one The Nail since my intention was to show this from the perspective of the nail. http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-level2-previous.php?id=10567 I remember trying to wrap my head around what it meant to use rhythm in free verse. In my mind, this one (A Day in the Life of T...

Re: Be a Better Writer--MASTERING METER

That's what I've been doing when I dig out my poems, so I guess I'm on the right track. :) It's hard to explain, but since they aren't complete sentences, sometimes a line can be read either way - alone or with another line. I used to bristle against using a lot of periods in a stanza because I was ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--MASTERING METER

I came up with two new ones just minutes ago. There was a fly buzzing in here and it was really getting on my nerves. So I killed him! And much to his surprise, He met with his demise. Then another one started buzzing. If buzzing is a must, Another one bites the dust. Seriously, though, I don't know...

Re: Be a Better Writer--MASTERING METER

It's been almost seven years since I've written poetry on a regular basis. I think I've written a total of three since 2007. Anyway, I used to enjoy experimenting with different patterns. I didn't look them up, so I don't know if there were even names for them, but I just made them up as I went. ;) ...
