Re: Beginnings (#1)--the 4th judging criterion
Hi Jan! What do you think about this as a beginning? "Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop," advised the King of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland ."Good advice, but more easily said than done," you might be tempted to respond. Surely, no part of writi...

Re: Be a Better Writer--ADJECTIVES in the proper order
Hi Jan! Are these sentences fine? 1 I never like a dull, dark, and soundless day. 2 These errors stand out like huge, red, blinking lights. 3 Jack's voice thick and sloppy because his mouth was full of food. I find it interesting that some adjectives have a different order. For example, During the m...

Hi Jan!
Is sound bite writing related to tight writing? What are the characteristics of sound bites? Is sentence length an important criterion here?
Thank you

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons--TIGHT WRITING
Hi Jan! May I have a go? Doreen glued to her book while the subway clacked relentlessly. Realising the big chap next to her, she inched towards the window, exposing her left shoulder. When the train sped through the second of five tunnels before her home's , Doreen wished to have a backlit electroni...

Re: Be a Better Writer--PARAGRAPHS FOR NONFICTION WRITERS
Hi Jan! I certainly agree with you that we should not be pigeonholed by a 4-sentence paragraph ( opinion->explanation->example/elaboration->link). Ijust remember that we sometimes write spontaneously in a longer paragraph, reflecting a different version of paragraphing. The first sentence is introdu...

Re: Be a Better Writer--PARAGRAPHS FOR NONFICTION WRITERS
Hi Jan! Thank you for this new topic. I'm interested in writing about my life journey with my wife from her stroke to post-stroke situations. Will this be nonfiction narrative writing when I share my life episodes with my readers? Is there any standard structure for this genre of story telling? Than...

Re: Be a Better Writer--AVOIDING ETHNIC STEREOTYPES
Hi ! I don't wish to have the last say about the discussion but I speak as someone who lives and works in a multiracial environment. Racial harmony is an important issue. Majority of us are non-native speakers of English so the word"bu___it" is just the dung from an animal. Cow dung is use...

Re: Be a Better Writer--AVOIDING ETHNIC STEREOTYPES
Hi Jan! Thank you for opening up this topic-it's really food for thought! We are so conditioned by the world that we live in, and tend to forget others who may hold different values or beliefs. To say that someone eats like a pig may be an English idiom but it gives serious offense to those who cons...

Hi Jan!
Do you think ethnic stereotypes may come in the forms of making people of another race as minor characters, and also denying them a voice in our narrative. For example, we can make a colored or black person a servant or a watchman. They are seen but not heard.
